NBA play-offs: San Antonio Spurs clinch series win over Portland Trail Blazers

Victor Wembanyama claimed a double-double to help the San Antonio Spurs secure their first series win in the NBA play-offs for nine years.

The Spurs led by as many as 28 points as they cruised to a 114-95 victory in Texas and a 4-1 series win over the Portland Trail Blazers.

Wembanyama registered 17 points and 14 rebounds while De’Aaron Fox scored a game-high 21 as six San Antonio players reached double figures.

“It was as sharp as we’ve been,” said Spurs coach Mitch Johnson, whose team are the Western Conference’s second seed and join top-seed Oklahoma City Thunder in the Conference semi-finals.

Wembanyama, who has already been named this season’s defensive player of the year, added six blocks for San Antonio.

“[They are] a great basketball team,” added Portland coach Tiago Splitter. “They have a superstar that changed the game. They deserve it.”

The Spurs will face either the Denver Nuggets or Minnesota Timberwolves next, with the Timberwolves leading the series 3-2.

In the Eastern Conference, Joel Embiid scored 33 points as the Philadelphia 76ers won 113-97 at the Boston Celtics to keep their series alive.

Embiid was playing his second game since undergoing an emergency appendectomy on 9 April and helped the Sixers cut their series deficit to 3-2.

If they can win game six in Philadelphia on Thursday, the series will go to a decider at second seed Boston on Saturday.

“I found my rhythm in the second half,” Embiid said. “We adjusted some stuff at half-time and got a win. That’s all that matters.

“We’re going to need everybody to come back to Boston.”

The winners will face either the New York Knicks or Atlanta Hawks, with third seed New York leading 3-2 after a 126-97 home win.

Jalen Brunson scored 17 of his 39 points in the fourth quarter to keep the Knicks clear while London-born team-mate OG Anunoby claimed 17 points and 10 rebounds.

If Atlanta win at home on Thursday, they will return to New York for a series decider on Saturday.

‘I kissed Rodrigo’ – Roberto de Zerbi praises Bentancur’s red card against Manchester United

Despite the late elation sparked by Solanke’s 92nd-minute equaliser, Tottenham remain in the relegation zone with just three points from their opening six matches.

It is just the fourth time the club have failed to win each of their opening six games of a league season, after 2008-09, 1955-56 and 1912-13.

Spurs have often looked lively in attack this season, but they have lacked conviction in front of goal and only 19th-placed Coventry have scored fewer goals than Tottenham‘s three.

However, Tottenham fans can take belief from their overall performance at Old Trafford as they ran United ragged in the opening half with fluid, high-tempo football.

“Today has been the game where for the first time this season we showed we are a team,” De Zerbi said.

“We played for the team-mates, we played together, we stayed inside of the game in every situation and we attacked as a team and defended as a team.”

The Italian manager added on Sky Sports: “I’m very happy because I’ve seen the right spirit, the right character and I want to start from this character, this reaction, this behaviour.”

Tottenham spent more than £250m on new talent over the summer – adding 10 players to their squad.

But their poor start has prompted the club to organise a warm-weather training camp in Spain, with the team expected to travel to Marbella on Sunday in the hope it will provide a chance for their new-look squad to bond.

“Now the target is to build the team,” De Zerbi said.

“We are a great group of players but we are not a team yet and to be a team is to play for the team-mates, suffer together, attack together.”

Spurs face newly-promoted Coventry on Monday, 19 October before making the short trip to Chelsea the following Saturday.

Ulster 26-26 Munster: Richie Murphy says Ulster are ‘playing matches like they’re training sessions’

Published

Despite the return of Ireland internationals Stockdale, McCloskey and Nick Timoney, Ulster struggled against a powerful display from Munster in the first half as tries from Alex Kendellen (2), Marnus van der Merwe and Dan Kelly put Clayton McMillan’s side in the driving seat at the break.

But despite a spirited second-half showing to earn another three points after last week’s draw in Glasgow, Murphy said he was “bitterly disappointed” when asked if he was left with mixed emotions.

“We allowed Munster to set the tempo, we were inaccurate with our first launch, so that we kicked off, they kicked out, so we were inaccurate with that first launch,” added Murphy.

“Off the back of that, penalty, penalty and then you’re back in your corner and fighting for your life.

“Once you’re five metres out and the opposition have a line-out, it’s very hard to stop, so that gave them control of the first half.”

Having pegged Munster back, Ulster could have won the game with the final play, but Robert Baloucoune’s attempted pass to Matthew Devine was cut out by Alex Nankivell as the hosts’ winless URC run stretched to seven games.

“Coming in at half-time, I thought the lads reacted really well,” added Murphy.

“We made some changes, still very inaccurate in the second half and didn’t look after the ball well enough, didn’t control field position at all in the game, but ultimately we got into a situation where last play of the game we were running at them and gave them the ball back again.

“Our turnover rate needs to come down, our scrum has been going really well but took a backward step tonight and I kind of feel like we didn’t attack the game the way we needed to.”

Munster boss McMillan was similarly downbeat after his side were held scoreless in the second half to let slip a 21-point advantage.

“We talked about it at half-time that Ulster are a quality side that won’t go away,” he said.

“We needed to continue to be accurate and just apply pressure in the right parts of the field.

“But we didn’t quite get the same quality of possession in the second half, and Ulster were good enough to find a way back into the game.”
