Pete Hegseth and Democratic Senator Tussle Over Sending Military to Polls

Published

on

Pete Hegseth ducked and dodged around answering questions on the likelihood he would deploy troops to polling places during this year’s November elections.

During Thursday’s Senate Armed Services Committee hearing, Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) pressed Hegseth on whether he’d send troops to seize ballots at voting machines in the upcoming elections, something President Donald Trump previously said he regretted not doing in the 2020 election – which he still contends was stolen from him.

“If the president, who regrets not signing that executive order to the then SecDef in 2020, asks you to seize ballots or voting machines in states during the 2026 election will you stand up to the Constitution and say no, or will you salute and do his bidding?” Slotkin asked.

Hegseth sidestepped the question by saying Slotkin was engaging in “yet another gotcha hypothetical.” Slotkin refuted that and pressed him even harder, noting it was no longer hypothetical based on Trump’s previous comments of regret.

“It’s not a hypothetical. I refuse to accept — you give that answer all the time,” she said. “You and I have done this dance before, get over it! Your boss, the guy you’re performing for right now, told the journalists this year that he wished he signed that executive order to your predecessor. And your predecessor said publicly ‘Thank god, we didn’t actually go forward with it.’ What are you going to do?”

She added: “You’re the guy here in the seat. It’s not hypothetical. Tell the American people, will you deploy the uniform military to our polls to collect voter rolls or machines?”

Again, Hegseth ducked the opportunity to rise to the moment and say definitively he wouldn’t send troops to seize ballots. Instead, he accused Slotkin of performing for cable.

“Dude, just answer the question,” Slotkin responded.

Hegseth did not answer the question. Rather, he pointed out that soldiers were deployed to ballot stations in the 2024 elections already. Slotkin came back quick to point out that those troops were ordered by the individual state’s governors and not President Biden. She then urged him a final time to commit to not deploying soldiers during the upcoming election.

“It’s never been done in our history,” Slotkin said. “Please stand up for the Constitution. Do not send uniform military to our polls.”

Peter Lenkov Launches Website For Out-of-Work Hollywood Pros

Published

on

Former Hawaii Five-O showrunner Peter Lenkov is rolling out a new website this week that seeks to match out-of-work pros in Hollywood with employers who are in need of skilled craftspeople.

Dubbed Between Gigs, the website is currently onboarding set carpenters, makeup artists, hairstylists, costumers and other below-the-line workers to create a database for “clients who need their expertise for projects, tasks, and services.”

“Our professionals come from entertainment,” the site says. “Our clients are anyone who could use their expertise.”

The website is billed with the line, “extraordinary talent. Every day solutions.”

“We’re just in the early stages,” Lenkov tells Deadline of the website that went live Sept. 28. “I just put it up on Facebook and Instagram. We haven’t really gone wide with it at all. I was sort of testing the market as we’re building out the site to see if there’s proof of concept. We got a ton of people signing up right away. So it seems like it’s a necessity.”

Lenkov said the idea came after watching how the industry contraction impacted so many people.

“A great editor had called me and said, ‘do you know anything? The show that I was working on is moving out of the state,’” says Lenkov. “And I thought, my God, this is world-class talent that’s available, and this person may not get a job for three, four, five months. How do you sustain yourself during that time? I called my sister, who’s a corporate headhunter, and said, ‘do you think there’s a marketplace where we could have these people?’”

Lenkov admits there is nothing particularly unique about below-the-line workers accepting short-term gigs outside of the industry. “It’s been going on forever. I remember on productions I did over the years where a producer would hire somebody on the weekend to come fix something at their house and would pay them extra. It’s a tradition that’s gone on, using people in their free time, but it’s never been organized on a real bonafide platform. These people are really skilled at what they do.”

Lenkov has been working on indie movies and serving on non-profit boards since parting ways with CBS TV Studios in 2020 following an investigation into the work environment he fostered on MacGyver. Lenkov was based at the studio for more than a decade and was its go-to writer-producer for procedural reboots, having successfully brought back Hawaii Five-0, MacGyver and Magnum P.I.

“It really was an implosion of my life and it was terrible, just terrible,” remembers Lenkov. “As soon as that happened, I had a lot of people reach out to me who I never had the time to help with their own projects. So I started doing a lot of that. We made a lot of smaller movies, some big ones. I joined two boards, one is World Housing, the other one’s the National Hispanic Media Coalition. I got to do things that were outside my wheelhouse. I feel like in hindsight, it was life-changing in a very positive way.”

The website is not a way for Lenkov to make extra cash. “It’s not a business. It’s a mission,” he says. “I’m trying to do something that’s tombstone worthy, that adds some value.”

‘Miami Vice ’85’ Taps Walton Goggins In Villain Role

Published

on

EXCLUSIVE: No stranger to showing off his bad side, Walton Goggins looks to have found a new villainous role to sink his teeth into as sources tell Deadline he set to join Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in Universal’s Miami Vice ’85. Kosinski is directing the pic which also stars Whitney Peak, Alden Ehrenreich, Camila Morrone, John Leguizamo and Danny Ramirez.

Miami Vice ’85, with a screenplay by Dan Gilroy, explores the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami in an all-new version of Miami Vice, inspired by the pilot episode of the landmark 1984-90 NBC series. The movie will be filmed for Imax and is set for release on May 19, 2028. Production will begin this year.

While unconfirmed sources tell Deadline Goggins woould play one of the henchman to Leguizamo’s Cartel king.

Kosinski has already assembled knock out cast but sources tell Deadline the director was high on Goggins early to play this role but scheduling for his hit show Fallout had to be worked out first. Once that was settled last week a deal was done for the Emmy nominee to join the cast.

The film is produced by Dylan Clark/Dylan Clark Productions and Kosinski. Gilroy’s script is based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich from the series he executive produced with Michael Mann; Eric Warren Singer wrote an earlier draft of the screenplay. EVP Production Development Sara Scott and Creative Executive of Production Development Christina Hoffrogge oversee the project for the studio.

Goggins is currently in production on Season Three of the hugely successful series Fallout produced by Kilter Films for Amazon. He recently wrapped Mister directed by Wade Eastwood and produced by Thunder Road Film for Amazon International. Coming to theaters on November 25 is the new magical coming-of-age animated Hexed for Walt Disney Animation Studio.

Goggins is repped by Darris Hatch Management and Production and CAA.
