Women’s Super League 2: Birmingham and Crystal Palace promoted as Charlton fall into play-off position

Published

on

Despite being outside the automatic promotion places at kick-off, Palace were arguably in the best position, playing bottom of the league knowing that a win would secure a top-two finish.

However, they were given an early shock as Portsmouth’s Megan Hornby scored direct from a corner in the third minute.

That seemed to jolt Palace into action and Molly-Mae Sharpe equalised from close range just eight minutes later.

Meanwhile, at The Valley, Charlton had begun to drop off after a bright start with Birmingham gradually gaining the upper hand.

Addicks’ goalkeeper Sophie Whitehouse was forced into action to keep out Oceane Hurtre’s well-struck effort.

The pressure eventually told in the 27th-minute as Leidhammar headed home Hurtre’s left-wing cross at the far post.

Birmingham remained in the ascendency with Leidhammar’s free-kick tipped onto the bar by Whitehouse before Batcheba Louis put the rebound over the bar.

And with Palace unable to make the most of their chances in the other game, that was how it stayed until the break – Birmingham top and Palace ahead of Charlton on goal difference.

It didn’t stay that way for long as Ashleigh Weerden rounded the goalkeeper to put Palace in front less than two minutes into the second half.

From there the floodgates opened for the Eagles with Weerden getting a second and Kirsty Howat making it four moments later.

Just as Palace’s promotion party was beginning at the VBS Community Stadium, Birmingham might just have been starting to put the champagne on ice themselves.

Charlton failed to deal with a corner from the right and Liedhammar was there to pounce, one touch before finding the top corner with a shot on the turn.

Palace made it six against Portsmouth through Annabel Blanchard and Elise Hughes, and with Charlton never looking like scoring, the only question was whether Jo Potter’s side could keep scoring to pip Birmingham to the title on goal difference – 11-1 would have done it.

As it was, they had to settle for six and, although a Charlton flurry finally came in the 13 minutes of added time, Birmingham held on comfortably enough with the final whistle sparking wild celebrations.

Sophie Cunningham says DiJonai Carrington ‘just trying to get attention’ with flagrant foul

Published

on

CHICAGO — Leaning against the wall in a United Center tunnel Saturday afternoon, Sophie Cunningham reflected on the emerging truth of her existence: Sometimes she seeks the spotlight, and the rest of the time, the spotlight seeks her.

“Another day, another dollar, welcome to my life, boys and girls,” the Indiana Fever guard declared.

It should surprise no one, of course, that Cunningham took a hard foul in a 90-86 win over the Chicago Sky and then elected to give as good as she got. The arm-to-the-neck she absorbed from the Sky’s DiJonai Carrington on a first-quarter layup attempt, which resulted in Carrington’s ejection, was just the start.

“From my point of view, I mean, clearly I think it was unnecessary,” Cunningham said after the game. “I’ve never really spoken to her and have no beef with her. But I guess she has some pent-up stuff. So get your s— off. That’s fine. I can take it.”

Cunningham immediately popped up, pushed Carrington and was restrained by teammate Makalya Timpson while exchanging words. (“I’m not going to let anyone just do that to me, I think everyone knows that,” Cunningham said.) Carrington was assessed a Flagrant 2 foul, but Cunningham wasn’t hit with a technical foul for the shove because officials “deemed her reaction to the severity of the contact to be acceptable,” per a pool report distributed after the game.

Shortly after heading to the locker room, a post appeared on Carrington’s Threads account tagging the Fever with the phrase “WHITE PRIVILEGE.” (Carrington was not available for comment Saturday.)

“Oh yeah, we saw it,” Cunningham said. “I think the league is taking care of that. I mean, this has nothing to do with race. Last year I did the same thing, and I got kicked out, as I deserved to be kicked out. There’s no reason to even play that card.”

While Fever coach Stephanie White said after the game that she didn’t believe Carrington connected with Cunningham’s neck intentionally, Cunningham drew a straight line to her own infamous ejection against the Connecticut Sun late last season — and not necessarily to the backlash against her recently published comments regarding transgender athletes.

In that 2025 game, Cunningham chased down guard Jacy Sheldon, now a member of the Sky, on a breakaway and wound up applying a headlock to Sheldon in the ensuing dust-up. The disconnect for Cunningham is that Carrington wasn’t even a member of the Sky last year.

“She has no reason to be doing any of that,” Cunningham said. “Like, I don’t even know her. She wasn’t even on the team when all that was going on. But I do think when people play the Fever, we’re nationally televised, there’s a lot of eyes on us. People just want attention. And that’s her just trying to get attention.”

The ruckus around Cunningham does not appear to be dissipating, in any event. There were more protests and counterprotests regarding transgender athletes around the United Center on Saturday, and Cunningham checked into the game to a mixed chorus of cheers and boos in the first quarter.

Not long after, she had not one but two teammates turning her away from another conflagration in the wake of Carrington’s foul — first Timpson, then veteran Monique Billings.

“She’s like, ‘Quit being messy,’” Cunningham said of Billings. “I’m like, ‘You’re right, Mo. This is time for me to be better.’”

ASHBURN, Va. — Washington Commanders left tackle Laremy Tunsil suffered a torn triceps on Saturday that will likely require surgery, according to a league source. While the timetable for his recovery isn’t clear, the source said he will miss at least a portion of the regular season.

Tunsil grabbed his left arm after a one-on-one rep against defensive end Odafe Oweh and went inside the team’s medical tent next to the practice field. He was later taken back inside the team’s practice facility for further evaluation.

Tunsil, 32, was acquired in a trade with the Houston Texans in 2025 and immediately became the leader of the Commanders’ offensive line. The five-time Pro Bowler had one of his finest seasons statistically last season, allowing only 15 pressures on 491 pass-blocking snaps, according to Pro Football Focus.

The Commanders rewarded him with a two-year, $60.2 million contract extension that made him the highest-paid left tackle in average annual value. It was the third time he’s reset the market for his position.

The Commanders are also currently without starting center Nick Allegretti (calf) and tight end John Bates (hamstring). Coach Dan Quinn indicated prior to Saturday’s practice that the two will likely miss the team’s joint practice with the Miami Dolphins on Wednesday.
