Last season, the Champions League introduced a revamped format. Instead of four-team groups competing against each other home and away, 36 teams were all put together in one league table.
Following the league phase, the top eight sides in the standings automatically qualified for the round of 16 and the bottom 12 were eliminated — leaving the 16 teams who finished from ninth to 24th.
They competed in a two-legged play-off round to reach the latter stages. The successful play-off teams faced top-eight opponents in a two-legged round of 16 to make the quarter-finals.
The quarter-finals and semi-finals have also been a home and away double-header. But the final is a one-off showpiece with glory on the line over 90 minutes, with extra time and penalties if needed.
