WASHINGTON, D.C. — Mick Abel won’t be returning to a mound for the Minnesota Twins just yet.
The team said Thursday the young right-hander received a cortisone shot in his right triceps after reporting soreness following a Saturday bullpen session. Twins assistant general manager Alex Hassan described the soreness as “the back of the tricep or a tricep impingement” and said Abel will be reevaluated Tuesday. Abel, who is 1-2 with a 3.98 ERA in four games and 16 strikeouts in 13 scoreless innings spanning his last two outings, originally landed on the injured list on April 20 because of right elbow inflammation.
“Before, it was in the front of the joint,” Hassan said of Abel’s injury. “Still a little bit of soreness. He got the cortisone. … Once we get him throwing, we’ll know when he’s going to get (back on) the mound and then can build a timeline from there.”
Hassan had more solid updates regarding some top prospects:
• Walker Jenkins, who has been sidelined with a left shoulder sprain since slamming into an outfield wall Sunday, started physical therapy after receiving a cortisone injection. Following two weeks of rest and rehab, the Twins will reevaluate Jenkins’ progress.
• Emmanuel Rodriguez, who was placed on the IL with a left thumb strain Wednesday, is expected to need a short absence to recover from what Hassan described as a muscular injury.
“There’s nothing ligament-related,” Hassan said. “There was some swelling around the muscle, which was great news.”
