Parallel Tales, All Of A Sudden’EPs Launch Financier Saudade Ink
EXCLUSIVE: Ireland-UK producer Mike Downey and Istanbul-based Emir Külal Haznevi have joined forces on boutique film financing outfit Saudade Ink to develop, produce and invest in arthouse cinema from across the world.
The film production and development fund, which has been pulled together with a consortium of private individuals from Turkey and the Middle East, is looking to spend up to €2 million ($2.3m) a year in its first two years, making strategic investments of between €150,000 and €200,000 in individual projects.
Downey and Haznevi estimate that they will make investments in five to eight productions from leading international auteur directors per year, with some seed funding for development.
The pair will be in Cannes this year scouting for potential investments and also as the executive producers of Cannes Palme d’Or contenders Parallel Tales by Asghar Farhadi and All of a Sudden by Ryusuke Hamaguchi.
Saudade Ink consolidates a long-running production relationship between Downey and Haznevi, who previously collaborated on Agnieszka Holland’s Green Border and recent Oscar candidate Franz, as well as such auteur fare including Rajko Grlic’s It All Ends Here and Antonio Nuic’s Looping, which is set for international premiere later in the year.
“Emir and I have been working together on a wide range of productions for a number of years now,” says former European Film Academy chair and Downey Ink Principal Downey.
“The time had come to formalize our business relationship, and the coming together of the film fund gave us the ideal opportunity to do that. And what better time to do it than with a couple of our strategic investments being selected for competition in Cannes.”
“Our connections with talent at the highest level, has been the catalyst for the bringing together of the Saudade Ink. fund,” says Syrian—born, Istanbul-based Haznevi, “Our initial investments have seen a low-risk strategy already bear fruit on individual projects, ranging from Franz which had its world premiere in Toronto as well as Green Border. We have had our four last films in a row all launched at FIAPF ‘A’ Class festivals, and the commensurate sales have resonated with our investors.”
Downey was previously CEO of London and Dublin-based Film and Music Entertainment and is no stranger to the film financing game having produced over 100 films and launched his first production company on the German Stock Market at the DAX Neuer Markt during its hey-day.
“We have contacts to European and global talent that is second to none and as our recent output shows with my Girls on Wire by Vivian Qu, from China in Berlin Competition and Farhadi and Hamaguchi in Cannes we can access talent at the highest level. World cinema, in the sense of ‘world music’ has always been my passion and it is reflected in the 100+ films I’ve made all over the world,’ he said
Haznevi was born in 1986 in Syria. He graduated in Cinema Studies at Marmara University and founded Saudade Film in 2015. He has worked as a creator and producer in more than 250 episodes for a wide variety of Turkish and international TV including Türk Caz Standartlari Enstitüsü, and Muasir.
He and Downey are also currently developing his first feature-length film The Sun, The Moon and The Eleven Stars as a director.
The pair Saudade Ink as a script driven venture, pointing to their past work connecting them with a range of writers including James Ellroy, the late Gunter Grass, Lee Hall (Billy Elliot), Colm Toibin, David Grossman, Thomas Keneally (Schindler’s List), IDA writer Rebecca Lenckiewicz, VICE Group founder and CEO Shane Smith.
The partnership is non-exclusive and Haznevi and Downey will still run their own individual slates through their respective companies Saudade and Downey Ink.
Haznevi has a number of projects currently in production and development. Downey continues his partnership with Sarka Cimbalova’s Prague-based Marlene Film with whom he partnered on the last three Agnieszka Holland films, Franz, Green Border and Charlatan.
Further projects with Holland and Cimbalova are in the works. In addition, Downey’s screenplay adaptation of Albanian epistolary novel If I Were A Boy by Haki Stërmilli directed and co-written by Fatmir Koci, begins shooting in the late fall of this year.
Other projects include feature documentary Don’t Stop Dreaming about the Rio de Janeiro Ballet phenomenon Projeto ViDançar, which is due to begin production this November. He also has works in the pipeline with Chinese director Vivian Qu.
No stranger to working with hi-end art house talent, Downey worked closely with a wide range of film makers during his 25 year presence on the board of the European Film Academy collaborating with the likes of Wim Wenders, Istvan Szabo, Sir Ben Kingsley, Pawel Pawlikowski, David Mackenzie, Krysztof Zanussi, Krzysztof Zulawski, Humbert Balsam, Francis Boespflug, Ildiko Enyedi, Agnes Jaoui, Mika Kaurismaki, Cedric Klapisch, Domenico Procacci, and Jim Sheridan.

Peter Lenkov Launches Website For Out-of-Work Hollywood Pros
Former Hawaii Five-O showrunner Peter Lenkov is rolling out a new website this week that seeks to match out-of-work pros in Hollywood with employers who are in need of skilled craftspeople.
Dubbed Between Gigs, the website is currently onboarding set carpenters, makeup artists, hairstylists, costumers and other below-the-line workers to create a database for “clients who need their expertise for projects, tasks, and services.”
“Our professionals come from entertainment,” the site says. “Our clients are anyone who could use their expertise.”
The website is billed with the line, “extraordinary talent. Every day solutions.”
“We’re just in the early stages,” Lenkov tells Deadline of the website that went live Sept. 28. “I just put it up on Facebook and Instagram. We haven’t really gone wide with it at all. I was sort of testing the market as we’re building out the site to see if there’s proof of concept. We got a ton of people signing up right away. So it seems like it’s a necessity.”
Lenkov said the idea came after watching how the industry contraction impacted so many people.
“A great editor had called me and said, ‘do you know anything? The show that I was working on is moving out of the state,’” says Lenkov. “And I thought, my God, this is world-class talent that’s available, and this person may not get a job for three, four, five months. How do you sustain yourself during that time? I called my sister, who’s a corporate headhunter, and said, ‘do you think there’s a marketplace where we could have these people?’”
Lenkov admits there is nothing particularly unique about below-the-line workers accepting short-term gigs outside of the industry. “It’s been going on forever. I remember on productions I did over the years where a producer would hire somebody on the weekend to come fix something at their house and would pay them extra. It’s a tradition that’s gone on, using people in their free time, but it’s never been organized on a real bonafide platform. These people are really skilled at what they do.”
Lenkov has been working on indie movies and serving on non-profit boards since parting ways with CBS TV Studios in 2020 following an investigation into the work environment he fostered on MacGyver. Lenkov was based at the studio for more than a decade and was its go-to writer-producer for procedural reboots, having successfully brought back Hawaii Five-0, MacGyver and Magnum P.I.
“It really was an implosion of my life and it was terrible, just terrible,” remembers Lenkov. “As soon as that happened, I had a lot of people reach out to me who I never had the time to help with their own projects. So I started doing a lot of that. We made a lot of smaller movies, some big ones. I joined two boards, one is World Housing, the other one’s the National Hispanic Media Coalition. I got to do things that were outside my wheelhouse. I feel like in hindsight, it was life-changing in a very positive way.”
The website is not a way for Lenkov to make extra cash. “It’s not a business. It’s a mission,” he says. “I’m trying to do something that’s tombstone worthy, that adds some value.”

‘Miami Vice ’85’ Taps Walton Goggins In Villain Role
EXCLUSIVE: No stranger to showing off his bad side, Walton Goggins looks to have found a new villainous role to sink his teeth into as sources tell Deadline he set to join Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in Universal’s Miami Vice ’85. Kosinski is directing the pic which also stars Whitney Peak, Alden Ehrenreich, Camila Morrone, John Leguizamo and Danny Ramirez.
Miami Vice ’85, with a screenplay by Dan Gilroy, explores the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami in an all-new version of Miami Vice, inspired by the pilot episode of the landmark 1984-90 NBC series. The movie will be filmed for Imax and is set for release on May 19, 2028. Production will begin this year.
While unconfirmed sources tell Deadline Goggins woould play one of the henchman to Leguizamo’s Cartel king.
Kosinski has already assembled knock out cast but sources tell Deadline the director was high on Goggins early to play this role but scheduling for his hit show Fallout had to be worked out first. Once that was settled last week a deal was done for the Emmy nominee to join the cast.
The film is produced by Dylan Clark/Dylan Clark Productions and Kosinski. Gilroy’s script is based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich from the series he executive produced with Michael Mann; Eric Warren Singer wrote an earlier draft of the screenplay. EVP Production Development Sara Scott and Creative Executive of Production Development Christina Hoffrogge oversee the project for the studio.
Goggins is currently in production on Season Three of the hugely successful series Fallout produced by Kilter Films for Amazon. He recently wrapped Mister directed by Wade Eastwood and produced by Thunder Road Film for Amazon International. Coming to theaters on November 25 is the new magical coming-of-age animated Hexed for Walt Disney Animation Studio.
Goggins is repped by Darris Hatch Management and Production and CAA.

Anonymous Content Plans Feature Adaptation Of James Baldwin Biography
Anonymous Content’s new CEO Darren Walker said the management and production company is developing a feature film on iconic writer James Baldwin that it will produce with the Obamas’ Higher Ground.
It’s commissioned Man Booker Prize winner Marlon James and his partner, James Baldwin scholar Nicholas Boggs, to write a script based on Boggs’ best-selling biography Baldwin: A Love Story, Walker said at the Bloomberg Screentime conference in LA, appearing with Laurene Powell Jobs, founder and president of Emerson Collective, Anonymous Content’s majority owner.
Walker was tapped as chief executive early this year. He was formerly the president of the Ford Foundation, leading its $17 billion endowment.
“Our balance sheet will be increased. Will have an envelope to do [more] … We can, because what happens when you have a long-term investor? You can be courageous if you have conviction and you have an investor who is aligned with that,” he said. The idea is to move away from the “fee-for-hire” production model. “Now Emerson has made it possible for us to become a financier in the market, so we’ll be able to co-finance, finance, take the lead in financing a film. So it won’t be like it has been, where our production team gets a great script and they say we’ve got to go out and find someone to finance this.”
Jobs, also a major investor in The Atlantic, said Anonymous Content founder Steve Golin had “a beautiful vision” but that people grieved and “entropy set in a bit” after he passed away seven years ago, followed by tough times in the industry with Covid, then Hollywood strikes. But the company is attached to several dozen festival films this season, Emmy wins, and, under television head David Levine, co-produced Zoe Kazan’s upcoming Netflix series East Of Eden as Walker said the independent builds up to “version 3.0”
Jobs, along with former HBO chief Richard Plepler, are joining a reconstituted board under chairman Michael Klein, Walker said. Steve Shikya was named COO in August following the hires of Liza Burnett Fefferman as chief communications and marketing officer and Michael Sinclair as chief legal officer.
Asked about the unconventional choice of Walker to run the company, Jobs said: “People were asking that at the beginning, and within a few months, everyone was saying what a brilliant stroke of genius it was, because he’s electrified Anonymous Content and also created quite buzz across the industry.”
