Michael Ealy To Star As Vin Tanner In ‘Magnificent Seven’ Series Remake

EXCLUSIVE: Michael Ealy (Power Book II: Ghost) is set to star opposite Matt Dillon and Will Patton in MGM+‘s upcoming eight-episode drama series The Magnificent Seven from Heroes creator Tim Kring, a reimagining of the classic 1960 Western film.

Ealy will play Vin Tanner. The role was played by Steve McQueen in the 1960 film, with Chris Pratt portraying the spiritual successor character Joshua Faraday in Antoine Fuqua’s 2016 remake.

Understated, sharp-eyed, and drier than a drought, Vin (Ealy) spent his early adulthood as a Pullman Porter — smiling on cue while passengers snapped their fingers for whiskey. When a gang held up his train, Vin talked his way into allowing him to join their gang. What followed was the freest stretch of his life, a found family, rough and loyal. It didn’t last. Now he drifts — watching everything carefully, reading people and terrain with uncanny precision. Underneath the dry wit is a deep longing to believe in something principled. He just hasn’t found it yet.

Ealy joins previously cast Dillon, who will play Chris Adams, the leader of the eponymous seven gunslingers, and Patton, who plays a new character.

Set in the tumultuous 1880s American frontier, the series follows seven gifted but flawed mercenaries hired to protect a peaceful Quaker village after it is massacred by mercenaries working for a ruthless land baron trying to seize their land. As the team embeds itself and prepares to defend against overwhelming odds, they grapple with a central question: is violence acceptable to defend people whose faith is based on non-violence? The series explores the backstories of each of the Seven, what’s at stake for them, and why they choose this mission—delving into themes of honor, sacrifice, redemption, morality, and faith. The Magnificent Seven will be available on premium linear channel and streaming service MGM+ in the United States, United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, and Chile.

The Magnificent Seven, part of MGM+’s strategy of doing series with cinematic look and feel, is written by Kring who executive produces alongside Donald De Line, Lawrence Mirisch, Bruce Kaufman and Dillon. Seth Yanklewitz is casting, MGM+ Studios and MGM Television Studios are producing. Production is targeted to begin in June 2026 in Calgary.

Ealy will next be seen playing Malcolm X in the Amazon limited series The Greatest from executive producer Michael B. Jordan and executive producer/showrunner Ben Watkins. He recently starred in Starz’s Power Book II: Ghost and was a series regular on the first season of Hulu’s Reasonable Doubt. Ealy is repped by Gersh, Anonymous Content, and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole.
