Arsenal title betting odds: Can 1-0 wins secure the double?
There have been times this season when Arsenal have looked unstoppable going forward. Mikel Arteta’s side thrashed Leeds United 5-0 in August, Nottingham Forest 3-0 in September and Atletico Madrid 4-0 in October. November brought more statement wins, beating Tottenham Hotspur 4-1 and Bayern Munich 3-1.
But as the season has progressed and the pressure has increased, their margins of victory have become tighter.
These days, we’re getting used to it being the old favourite of 1-0 to the Arsenal.
Since demolishing Spurs 4-1 again in February, their only win by more than two goals was the 3-0 defeat of Fulham just over a week ago. Arsenal have recorded 10 1-0 victories across the campaign and, significantly, four of those arrived in the space of 33 days as they hit the business end of the season.
Is this how they are going to complete their dream of a Premier League and Champions League double?
Sporting CP were seen off 1-0 in the first leg of a Champions League quarter-final early last month before progress was secured via a goalless draw in the second. Against Atletico Madrid in the semis, Arsenal drew 1-1 in the Spanish capital, then won the return 1-0 to reach the final against Paris Saint-Germain on May 30.
In the Premier League, Newcastle United and West Ham United have both recently been beaten 1-0.
The shift appears to have come following Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City at Wembley on March 22. They lost 2-0 that day before suffering another setback against Southampton of the Championship in the FA Cup six days later, with a 2-1 away loss.
That wobble left them rattled, and Arsenal have become pragmatic. The George Graham managerial era of the 1980s and early ’90s — 1-0 to the Arsenal and all that — has become relevant again. Now, with a five-point lead over City at the top of the table and two league matches remaining (City have three left), they are closing in on a potential double.
Victory over already-relegated Burnley next Monday night could set up a potential title-clinching visit to Crystal Palace on May 24, the final day of the top-flight season.
Betfair price Arsenal at 17/2 to beat Burnley 1-0, while they are 9/2 to defeat PSG by that same score in the Champions League final.
Arsenal have shown they know how to overwhelm teams but now they seem just as happy edging past them.
And it may yet win them two trophies.
