Sabres goal vs. Canadiens disallowed after 2 video reviews, 10-minute delay

MONTREAL — The Buffalo Sabres had the same goal confirmed by video review, then overturned by video review in Game 4 of their second-round series against the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday.

With the Sabres ahead 1-0 at 8:01 of the first period, Buffalo rookie Konsta Helenius — playing his first career playoff game — drove the puck to the net, entered the Canadiens crease and left the puck there in front of Montreal goaltender Jakub Dobeš.

Sabres forward Jack Quinn arrived and backhanded the puck into Dobeš’ glove for what initially looked like a great save.

The game was paused for a television timeout, and after replays suggested the puck had crossed the goal line inside Dobeš’ glove, referee Kelly Sutherland announced the officials would review the play.

A few minutes later, referee TJ Luxmore skated to center ice and announced the goal was good.

However, Canadiens coach Martin St. Louis challenged the goal for goaltender interference on Helenius, as he made contact with Dobeš while skating through the crease.

The goal was then reviewed again, and a few minutes later, it was overturned for goaltender interference. The NHL situation room confirmed that Helenius’ contact with Dobeš’ stick as he went through the crease opened up the Canadiens goaltender.

The entire sequence took roughly 10 minutes to play out, with not a second of game time having passed.

Just over two minutes after the goal was disallowed, Canadiens forward Alex Newhook scored to tie the score 1-1.
