Wirestock raises $23M to supply creative multi-modal data to AI labs
In the past few years, creative marketplaces and platforms have realized that they are sitting on a data goldmine, and they can either use that data to develop AI models themselves or turn it into a source of revenue by licensing it to other AI labs.
Wirestock, which previously helped photographers distribute and sell their work on stock photography services like Shutterstock, has taken the latter path.
The company pivoted to being a data provider in 2023, and now supplies datasets of images, videos, design assets, and gaming and 3D content to AI labs. Wirestock said its platform has signed up more than 700,000 artists and designers who complete different tasks for data collection, similar to freelancers on platforms like Fiverr.
Mikayel Khachatryan, the company’s co-founder and CEO, said Wirestock was transparent about its shift, and allowed artists to opt out of its data supply business (in 2022, the platform had over 100,000 photographers on its platform). Khachatryan didn’t specify how many people switched over as data providers for AI, only saying “the majority” did.
“Initially, a lot of our deals were just selling what we had off the shelf, like our existing library. But then it turned into a lot of custom requests for content and data, and that created new opportunities for creators, and the platform just took off,” he said.
The startup said on Thursday it has raised $23 million in Series A funding to build out the new data supply business. The round was led by Nava Ventures, and saw participation from SBVP (co-founded by Sheryl Sandberg), Formula VC, and I2BF Ventures.
Khachatryan says Wirestock currently provides multi-modal data to six of the largest foundation model makers, but he wouldn’t name them. He noted the company currently has an annual run-rate revenue of $40 million and has so far paid out $15 million to its contributors.
As part of the transition, the startup had to retrain some of its teams to annotate and label data in detail to make it useful for AI labs. It also had to build sales and enterprise teams to be able to pitch to hyperscalers, and find ways to get more creative assets in areas like 3D modeling.
Wirestock currently uses email marketing and referral programs to bring in new contributors. Photographers, videographers, and illustrators can apply to provide data on its website, but they have to complete an unpaid task as a quality check before they’re accepted. The company said it uses a mix of AI and human reviews to evaluate all work on the platform.
Demand for data supply services is sky high right now as AI labs race to continue improving their models. Companies like Surge, Scale AI, and Mercor have built businesses worth tens of billions seemingly overnight on the back of demand for different kinds of datasets, and a slate of new startups such as Micro1, Human Archive, and Human Native AI are working with top AI model makers, too.
Wirestock wants to focus on providing data for models that aid creative use cases, such as image and video generation. The company is also exploring other modalities like audio and music.
Freddie Martignetti, founder of Nava Ventures, said his fund was looking for a startup that was innovating on data procurement and refinement even before it learned about Wirestock.
“I think Wirestock has a deep understanding of what foundational models and hyperscalers need in terms of multi-modal data to start creating more human-like systems. The cornerstone of our thesis was that multi-modal data will be increasingly important, not just to create images or videos, but for models to complete real-world tasks,” Martignetti told TechCrunch.
Wirestock currently employs 60 people, and will use the new funding to hire for research, engineering, and product roles. It is also building enterprise software for AI labs to collaborate on datasets.
The funding round brings the startup’s total capital raised to about $26 million.

New Mexico court orders Meta to pay additional $567M in child safety case
A New Mexico Court judge on Thursday ordered Meta to pay a fine of $567 million, on top of the $375 million levied in March, in a case regarding social media harms and addiction. This brings the total fines the company has to pay to $942 million.
The court also ordered Meta to make changes to its platforms: it wants the company to removing Like counts, and only showing such metrics to children under 18 only with approval from a parent or a guardian. Push notifications to underaged users are also to be paused between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m, and their usage should be limited to 90 hours a month, which amounts to roughly three hours per day.
“Significant numbers of people in New Mexico experience harm from Meta’s products due to risks of sexual exploitation, interference with education, and adverse mental health outcomes,” the order said.
The judge acknowledged that Meta is not the only platform causing a mental health crisis among youth in the state, but maintained that its platforms play a significant part. He said that the company has caused a significant “public nuisance” in New Mexcio, and is required to abate that.
Meta said that it is going to appeal the judgment.
“We work hard to keep people safe on our platforms and have been transparent about the challenges of identifying and removing bad actors and harmful content. We remain confident in our record of protecting teens online and will continue to defend ourselves against claims that misrepresent the facts,” company spokesperson Andy Stone said in an emailed statement.
“For years, Meta knew its platforms were harming New Mexico’s kids, from feeding a youth mental health crisis to connecting predators with children, and it chose engagement and profit over their safety,” state Attorney General Raul Torrez said in a statement.
“Today, Meta is paying for that choice. This judgment holds the company accountable for the damage it caused to our children, our families, and our schools, and it forces real changes to how Meta operates in New Mexico,” he added.
The ruling comes in the wake of another loss in Los Angeles in March, where the court also ruled against the social media company for creating addictive patterns.
Meta is facing several other cases in the country. One of the notable cases is a joint lawsuit by 33 states, which was consolidated in an Oakland, California federal court. Several other states, like Tennessee, have brought their own cases against the company.

OpenAI’s new AI smart speaker will reportedly sell for between $300 and $400
More details continue to trickle out about OpenAI’s mysterious new hardware device — described previously as an AI-fueled smart speaker that will be the “physical manifestation” of ChatGPT.
Bloomberg now reports that the device will be “donut-shaped,” designed thusly to allow users to carry it around their home and place it in different locations, like a bedside table or a kitchen counter.
It will be constructed from “high-quality metal,” have a “premium look,” and (in a detail that mystifies) will have distinct “moving parts,” sources told Bloomberg.
It also could be slightly more expensive than your average smart speaker, perhaps $300 to $400 per unit, according to this report. For comparison, most of Amazon’s smart home speakers range in price from $40 on the low end to $240 on the high end.
So, to sum up: an expensive talking AI donut that has … moving parts? OpenAI releasing a smart home device has a certain logic to it, in that it would further integrate ChatGPT into users’ lives. However, historically speaking, smart speakers have not always been profitable and may prove a difficult market to break into. The potentially high price point also might not help.
The device, which is being developed in partnership with LoveFrom, the design studio founded by famous former Apple developer Jony Ive, will likely be released at some point in 2027, Bloomberg writes.
The company’s attempt to enter the hardware market has not gone off without a hitch. OpenAI is being sued by the current king of hardware, Apple, which has accused the AI lab of stealing trade secrets. OpenAI has denied wrongdoing.

Vietnam’s FPT Says It Joined OpenAI Partner Network to Expand Enterprise AI in APAC
Vietnam’s FPT is seeking a larger role in Asia-Pacific’s enterprise AI market through a newly announced relationship with OpenAI. The technology services company says it has joined the OpenAI Partner Network as a Select Partner.
FPT plans to bring OpenAI technology into its FleziPT enterprise AI ecosystem and Patch the Enterprise cybersecurity initiative. The proposed services would automate business workflows and help security teams identify, prioritize and remediate software vulnerabilities.
FPT announced the designation on Aug. 6, 2026, but OpenAI had not included the company in its public partner directory when checked that day. Neither company disclosed commercial terms, named customers, pricing or a deployment schedule.
FPT targets security and workflow automation
OpenAI launched its Partner Network on June 14, 2026, for consulting, technology and systems integration companies that build, sell and deploy services using its products. The network has three tiers: Select, Advanced and Elite.
OpenAI said it considers sales performance, technical capabilities, deployment experience and participation in joint sales efforts. It committed $150 million to the program and aims to train 300,000 certified consultants by the end of 2026.
Partner status provides access to training, technical resources and support, but it does not certify the security, performance or regulatory compliance of a partner’s products. Customers still need to evaluate each deployment independently.
FPT intends to incorporate OpenAI technology into Patch the Enterprise, its AI-assisted vulnerability-management initiative. FPT previously described Patch the Enterprise as a program that uses AI to analyze code and recommend fixes.
Other AI models for vulnerability triage can narrow searches for potentially affected code, but analysts must still validate their findings. FPT has not released performance tests or customer case studies for its proposed integrations.
The company also plans to develop AI agents and automated workflows through FleziPT. ChatGPT’s expansion into workplace tasks shows the controls organizations may need when agents can access files, applications and internal systems.
APAC deployments still require scrutiny
The announcement follows an FPT-commissioned study conducted by Forrester Consulting and published on July 8, 2026. The research surveyed 397 business and technology decision-makers.
Forty-one percent identified integration complexity as a barrier to operationalizing AI, while 38% cited data silos. The findings align with the implementation problems FPT is positioning its services to address, although the company funded the study.
Organizations evaluating the proposed services should establish where their data will be processed, who controls it and how long it will be retained. Source code, vulnerability findings, prompts, outputs and agent logs may be subject to privacy, security and cross-border transfer requirements that vary across APAC markets.
Customers should also restrict agent permissions and require human approval for consequential actions. Recent research has identified security gaps caused by excessive agent access across enterprise systems.
Procurement teams should request detection accuracy, false-positive rates, remediation results and compatibility details. Contracts should clearly assign responsibility among FPT, OpenAI and the customer.
FPT’s announcement offers APAC organizations another possible route to OpenAI deployment, but the first named customers, production results and OpenAI’s public confirmation will determine the partnership’s significance.
