This startup is betting India’s gig economy can train the world’s robots
In the last few years, India’s online food delivery market has grown significantly, with both Zomato and Swiggy going public and an increase in the number of cloud kitchens. Meanwhile, startups working on home services, such as on-demand household staffing platforms, including Urban Company, Snabbit, and Pronto, have gained popularity.
Silicon Valley-based start-up Human Archive is tapping into this trend, partnering with these companies to have workers wear special caps with cameras to collect egocentric (first-person point of view) video data of everyday tasks that could be used to train robots.
Without naming specific partners, the startup said it is working with companies in the home services, hostel, and restaurant sectors to collect egocentric data, and it says it has more than 1,000 active headsets deployed across multiple locations.
On the back of that traction, Human Archive said Tuesday it has raised $8.2 million in funding from Wing Venture Capital, NVP Capital, Y Combinator, and angels from OpenAI, Nvidia, Google, Mercor, AfterQuery, BAIR, SAIL, Brad Boa, and Meta.
The startup was founded by two Berkeley and two Stanford students — Samay Mani, Rushil Agarwal, Shloke Patel, and Raj Patel, the latter two being cousins. All four have research backgrounds spanning robotics, hardware, and tactile data.
The company’s founding is a direct bet on where the AI industry is heading. As robotics labs and frontier AI companies race to build machines that can perform physical tasks in the real world, they face a critical bottleneck — a shortage of high-quality, real-world training data showing humans doing everyday work. Human Archive’s bet is that the workers staffing India’s booming gig economy represent an untapped and scalable source of exactly that data.
While Human Archive is working with multiple partners, the startup said it was rejected by many Indian home services companies, including Pronto and Urban Company, for a collaboration.
The company’s rejection by major players became public fodder last weekend, when Indian outlet Entrackr reported that Pronto is actively seeking partnerships to collect worker data for robotics training, and that Snabbit had held early discussions with Human Archive before the project fell apart.
Urban Company CEO Abhiraj Singh Bhal responded on X, stating the company would not engage in such arrangements — prompting Patel to fire back that Urban Company would soon be forced to reconsider or risk losing relevance to customer churn. Co-founder Rushil Agarwal was blunter still, posting that Pronto founder Anjali Sardana had laughed at him and called him “stupid” when he raised the idea of a data partnership. Pronto acknowledged the conversations but said it chose not to move forward.
Across the country, other startups are collecting egocentric data from different work environments, including factory floors. To differentiate itself, Human Archive is using and developing additional devices, such as tactile gloves, a full-body motion capture suit, and wrist cameras to capture data including motion, and tactile force, synchronously aligned with RGB-D (color imagery paired in real time with depth information), to sell to AI labs. The startup believes that video data alone is not sufficient, but that pairing it with other sensor data makes it significantly more valuable.
Raj Patel told TechCrunch that while showing the project to other researchers, they came across egocentric data and wanted to combine video with tactile force data. The founders began talking to different labs and realized that the market for egocentric and sensor-based data was just heating up, and decided to build a company around that.
Initially, Human Archive used makeshift setups or off-the-shelf rigs to capture the data. Now, it is working on custom hardware that works together and captures different kinds of data. It already has more than 50 different devices deployed to collect different data points.
“To capture data, we started with iPhones, then we built our own custom rigs and caps. Now we have more than seven different hardware products that we use interchangeably across different modalities. After data collection from different devices, we worked on synchronizing data from all these different sources,” he said in a call.
The company said it is developing ways to fine-tune AI models with its own data and test them on robots to evaluate task effectiveness. By doing this, the startup can demonstrate the quality of its data to potential customers and post-train internal models.
Zach DeWitt, a partner at Wing VC, said the startup has a unique advantage in collecting data from multiple sensors.
“No one else in the world has been able to synchronize and collect headset RGB-D, force feedback, full-body motion capture, and synchronized chest and wrist camera data at scale. They’ve been doing internal model training on this data, and every major lab and university is interested in running experiments on it due to the novelty of the sensors and the scale of the new dataset they are releasing soon,” he told TechCrunch.
Collecting data in India and expansion plans
Despite rejection from notable players in the home services industry, Human Archive teamed up with smaller startups to offer discounted services to customers. When a worker arrives at a home, consumers are offered a choice through the app: pay a discounted price in exchange for consenting to data collection, or pay the full price for an unrecorded visit.
Raj Patel mentioned that customers have been happy to opt for the former, as disputes about service quality are common, and video recordings can help resolve them.
The company pays workers a base rate of $1 per hour for participating in egocentric data collection. A report from the Economic Times suggests that other companies pay ₹250–₹400 per hour (roughly $2.63–$4.20). Patel said competitors pay more than Human Archive, but its on-the-ground presence in India allows it to keep compensation lower.
“Human Archive’s network provides immediate, flexible earning opportunities globally, lowering the barrier to participating in the AI economy. We see this as a critical bridge that funds immediate livelihoods while building the infrastructure for a safer, more productive future,” DeWitt said.
Beyond wage payment, there are privacy concerns around data collection via video recording. It is not clear what information Human Archive gives workers about how their footage is used. The company said that its commercial contracts are compliant with India’s Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, as it displays a privacy policy notice, along with consent information detailing the purpose of data collection and how it is processed. The company said all data is anonymized, and faces are blurred from recordings. Last week, Moneycontrol reported that India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is looking into the consent mechanisms and data collection practices of startups collecting egocentric data through home service workers.
While Human Archive largely collects data in India, it has started expanding into Southeast Asia and the U.S. The company is also building a platform for anyone to participate in data collection and earn money. It also wants to offer customers in the U.S. services like cleaning or cooking in exchange for data collection by participating workers — though these programs are just in an early pilot stage.
Multiple well-funded startups are racing to build physical AI. Doing so requires massive amounts of training data showing humans at work — and Human Archive is one of the players competing to serve that demand. Whether its approach can scale will hinge on the partnerships it strikes and the uniqueness and volume of the data it can collect to satisfy the appetite of physical AI labs.

OpenAI’s ‘Doughnut-Shaped’ AI Speaker Could Launch in 2027
OpenAI’s next big bet could sit on your table and look suspiciously like a doughnut.
The AI company is reportedly developing a compact, battery-powered, displayless smart speaker expected to cost somewhere between $300 and $400. Bloomberg reports that the device could cost more than $300, while TechCrunch puts the expected price between $300 and $400.
Those details are still unconfirmed, and the device is reportedly targeting a 2027 release. But if the reports prove accurate, OpenAI’s hardware ambitions suggest something considerably larger than an attempt to build a better smart speaker:
The real prize may be removing the screen, keyboard, and even the smartphone from the conversation entirely.
OpenAI may be betting that AI needs its own hardware
For most users today, interacting with generative AI still begins with opening something. You launch ChatGPT on a phone. Open a browser tab. Tap an app. Type a prompt.
That creates friction, however small, between having a question and asking an AI to act on it. A dedicated OpenAI device could attack that friction directly.
The Verge reports that the device is expected to be roughly the size of a hockey puck, with a doughnut-like shape, battery power, cameras and other sensors, lights, and moving components. Mashable also describes the unusual smart-speaker form factor and the premium price expected.
The reported lack of a display may be especially significant. Without a screen competing for attention, conversation would presumably become the primary interface.
The Verge reports that the device could offer something resembling a more advanced version of ChatGPT Voice Mode, potentially powered by more capable AI models. Its moving components may even allow it to physically react during interactions, although exactly how that would work remains unclear.
A portable device matters because it could change the relationship between the user and the assistant. Instead of ChatGPT living inside a computer or phone, the AI could become something sitting nearby and ready for conversation throughout the day.
Generative AI systems such as ChatGPT are increasingly designed around conversations, reasoning, research, writing, planning, and multi-step tasks. Put those capabilities inside dedicated hardware and a smart speaker could stop being merely a voice-controlled appliance. It starts looking more like an always-available AI interface.
The $300 price could reveal OpenAI’s real target
The reported price is arguably more revealing than the doughnut shape.
At $300 to $400, OpenAI would be entering premium-device territory rather than chasing the inexpensive smart-speaker market. That would be a curious strategy if the goal were simply to compete for countertop space against Amazon Echo or Google Nest devices.
But OpenAI may not need millions of consumers to think they need another speaker. It needs them to believe that a dedicated AI device can do something their existing devices cannot.
Smartphones already have microphones, speakers, cameras, screens, processors, and increasingly capable AI assistants. Apple, Google, Samsung, and other device makers also control operating systems that can integrate AI deeply into products people already own.
OpenAI does not have that advantage.
Its own hardware could give the company more control over how users interact with ChatGPT, from the physical design and sensors to the conversational interface, rather than relying entirely on devices and operating systems controlled by other technology companies.
In that sense, the rumored speaker may be less an Alexa competitor than an attempt to reduce OpenAI’s dependence on the smartphone as the primary gateway to ChatGPT.

What an OpenAI device could mean for users
For consumers, the bigger question is not whether OpenAI can make an attractive AI speaker. It is whether owning one would meaningfully improve how they use AI every day.
A dedicated ChatGPT device could make common interactions faster and more natural. Instead of pulling out a phone to ask a question, summarize information, brainstorm an idea, manage a task, or get help while cooking or working, users could simply speak to an assistant that is always within reach.
The reported cameras and sensors also suggest that the device could eventually understand more about its surroundings than a conventional voice-only speaker, although OpenAI has not publicly confirmed what those components would do.
However, that potential convenience comes with trade-offs.
An always-available AI device equipped with microphones, cameras, and other sensors would inevitably raise questions about privacy, data collection, account security, and how much personal context users are comfortable sharing with an assistant sitting inside their homes.
OpenAI would need to give buyers clear answers about when those sensors are active, what information the device collects, what gets stored or transmitted, and what controls users have over their data.
Then there is the $300 to $400 question. At that price, consumers will have to decide whether a dedicated AI device offers enough value to justify buying another piece of hardware when ChatGPT already runs on phones, laptops, and tablets they own.
That makes OpenAI’s challenge unusually simple to describe and difficult to solve: The device cannot merely make ChatGPT more convenient. It has to make ChatGPT meaningfully better.
If it does, users could get an early glimpse of a computing model in which AI becomes less of an app and more of a persistent interface to information, services, and everyday tasks. If it does not, the device risks becoming another expensive gadget competing for an outlet and attention.
Jony Ive’s influence makes the form factor more important
The unusual design is another clue that OpenAI may not want consumers to think of this as an ordinary smart speaker.
TechCrunch reports that OpenAI is developing the device with LoveFrom, the design firm founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive. That involvement raises expectations that the eventual product will emphasize a different kind of human-computer interface rather than simply placing ChatGPT inside familiar electronics.
A doughnut-shaped, screenless device with moving components certainly qualifies as unfamiliar. But industrial design alone will not determine whether the experiment works.
OpenAI has to answer a much harder question: What is substantially easier, faster, or more useful when ChatGPT has its own piece of hardware? Without a compelling answer, even beautifully designed AI hardware risks becoming an expensive microphone connected to capabilities consumers already have on their phones.
The battle for AI could become a battle for the interface
The larger significance of OpenAI hardware is that the AI industry is beginning to confront an old technology lesson: controlling the software is powerful, but controlling how people access it can be just as important.
Apple has the iPhone and its operating systems. Google has Android. Amazon put Alexa into millions of homes. Meta is pushing its AI deeper into smart glasses and other devices.
OpenAI became one of the defining companies of the generative AI boom without owning a major consumer hardware platform. That leaves the company in an unusual position. ChatGPT can be enormously popular while still depending on phones, computers, app stores, and operating systems controlled by other technology companies.
A successful OpenAI device could begin changing that equation by giving the company a direct hardware interface built around ChatGPT. Instead of asking users to find ChatGPT inside someone else’s ecosystem, OpenAI could begin building a hardware experience around ChatGPT itself.
That is what makes this rumored device worth watching.
The strange shape will attract attention. The reported $300-plus price will generate debate. But the experiment underneath both is much more consequential: whether consumers want artificial intelligence badly enough to buy hardware designed around AI first, rather than simply adding AI to devices they already own.
If OpenAI can make people want dedicated AI hardware, it could reshape how we think about the next generation of personal computing.

Samsung’s August Update Patches 56 Security Vulnerabilities Across Galaxy Devices
Samsung is starting August with a security sweep that patches dozens of flaws across Galaxy phones and tablets.
The company has published details of its August 2026 Security Maintenance Release (SMR), which addresses 56 security vulnerabilities affecting eligible Galaxy smartphones and tablets running Android 14, Android 15, and Android 16.
The update includes 38 Android security fixes from Google’s August Security Bulletin and 18 Samsung-specific patches for One UI and Galaxy software. Of Google’s fixes, eight are rated critical, and 30 are classified as high priority.
Samsung also noted that nine Google-listed vulnerabilities are not part of this month’s release. One was already included in the July update, while the remaining eight do not affect Galaxy devices because they are tied to hardware or configurations Samsung does not use.
The rollout is expected to begin in the coming days, with Samsung’s latest flagship devices, including the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Flip 8, and Galaxy S26 series, likely receiving the update first before it expands to older flagship models and supported Galaxy A-series phones.
One UI patches close Galaxy-specific security gaps
Beyond Android itself, Samsung is fixing 18 Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVEs) affecting its own software.
Among the more notable fixes is a patch for an authorization bypass in SemClipboardService that could have allowed local apps to access clipboard contents without proper permission. Samsung also addressed vulnerabilities affecting Samsung Contacts, Dialer, Messages, Galaxy Themes, and AppLock.
Several of the fixes target media components and system libraries, including the VC1 and MPEG4 codecs, where memory-handling flaws could potentially be exploited by local attackers. The company also strengthened access controls for the Weaver hardware component, closing a vulnerability that could have allowed attackers with local access to render a device unusable.
Some Samsung-specific vulnerabilities remain undisclosed, as the company noted that certain SVE details cannot yet be publicly released.
