World Cup 2026: How many tournament shirts might not be worn in matches?

Published

on

Up to 18 of the national team shirts released for this summer’s World Cup could end up unused by their countries, following Fifa’s decision over which kits will feature in the group stage.

A total of 108 strips, excluding those worn by goalkeepers, have been released by the 48 teams taking part in the US this summer.

But only 87 of them are guaranteed to feature at least once in the tournament.

Every nation has at least two main kits, following the traditional ‘home’ and ‘away’ shirt concepts.

On top of that, 12 countries have released a third shirt that is a different colour to their first two shirts.

Fifa has already announced which of those shirts will be worn by teams during the 72 group-stage matches, with not selected for a game so far.

There is, of course, the possibility teams go on to wear their remaining shirts in later rounds in the tournament, should they progress.

The majority of shirts not selected for games so far are either away or third shirts. However, both Ghana and Uzbekistan will not wear their home shirts for any of their group-stage matches.

Australia, Austria, Belgium, Curacao, DR Congo, Iran, Ivory Coast, Japan, Netherlands, Portugal, Senegal and South Africa will not wear their away shirts in any of their three matches.

Ecuador, Haiti, Iraq and Jordan will go without using their third shirts in their scheduled matches.

Some nations will wear all three of their shirts during the group stage. Canada, Cape Verde, Mexico and Panama will wear different strips in all of their matches.

England and Scotland have both released two shirts each and will wear both in their group-stage fixtures. Scotland will, however, wear a different goalkeeper kit in all three of their group matches against Haiti, Morocco and Brazil.

French Open 2026 results: Aryna Sabalenka crumbles in defeat by Diana Shnaider in quarter-finals

Published

on

World number one Aryna Sabalenka saw her French Open title hopes vanish as she completely unravelled in a crushing quarter-final defeat by Diana Shnaider in yet another shock result at this year’s tournament.

Sabalenka, a beaten finalist at Roland Garros last year, was 6-3 4-1 up before the momentum suddenly shifted and sparked an extraordinary comeback from Shnaider.

The Russian 25th seed, playing in her first Grand Slam quarter-final, reeled off 12 of the final 13 games to win 3-6 7-5 6-0 and complete a monumental upset.

Belarusian Sabalenka had been the only Grand Slam singles champion remaining in an open women’s draw and was the heavy favourite for the title.

Shnaider will face qualifier Maja Chwalinska in the last four after the Pole defeated Anna Kalinskaya earlier on Wednesday.

More golf coverage coming to The Athletic with PGA Tour highlights

Published

on

The Athletic’s coverage of the PGA Tour now features highlights from every tournament on the tour, including this week’s Memorial Tournament.

We will use this footage, the latest addition to The Athletic’s menu of league highlights that already includes NFL, NBA and NHL, not only to deepen and enrich the coverage from our industry-leading golf team, but also to elevate our overall mission of bringing fans closer to the action.

You can expect to see post-round highlights in your feed every week, as well as original content featuring highlights and our reporting team, led by Gabby Herzig, Brody Miller and Brendan Quinn, in specific stories.

Golf is a simple game — get the ball into the hole with as few swings as possible — with enough complexities that it can take a lifetime to master. We can now use footage to show you how a player’s swing has changed over time, whether he’s keeping the club face open or closed, on a different swing plane, or has made wholesale adjustments to his stance.

And our team will be able to take you behind the scenes and in the moment at the biggest PGA Tour stops, from the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am to The Players Championship to the Tour Championship, and all the tournaments in between. You can expect to see reports from practice rounds, as well as interviews with players that showcase their personalities.

As part of these new efforts, Herzig’s story this week on phenom Blades Brown includes a video explaining why the 19-year-old has put himself in a unique position on the PGA Tour.

These efforts are to make The Athletic a place where golf fans can get what they want, when they want, and from some of the most trusted voices in the sport.

Thank you for reading, watching and listening.
