Scotland captain Caroline Weir has joined OL Lyonnes on a three-year deal until 2029.
The 30-year-old midfielder joins the 2026 Champions League runners-up on a free transfer from Real Madrid upon the expiry of her contract.
OL Lyonnes, who won their fifth consecutive league title last season, value Weir’s efficiency in front of goal and her experience at the highest level.
“For me, it’s the club with the most history in the women’s game,” Weir said upon completing the move.
“To be part of this project, the ambition of the club was in line with what I want to achieve, so I guess it was a no-brainer in many ways to commit to this club.”
One of the club’s biggest priorities this summer was to strengthen their midfield following the departure of captain Lindsey Heaps, who agreed to join NWSL expansion side Denver Summit FC.
OL Lyonnes confirmed to The Athletic that Heaps had already agreed a new two-year contract until 2028 with the French club before later agreeing to return to her hometown of Denver.
Heaps was an instrumental leader on and off the pitch during her five years at the club, helping Lyon win five league titles and the Champions League in 2022.
Weir brings extensive experience having previously played for Arsenal and Manchester City in the Women’s Super League before moving to Spain in 2022.
During her time at Real Madrid, she made 125 appearances and scored 63 times becoming the club’s all-time top scorer. She netted nine goals in Madrid’s European campaign last season in which they were knocked out in the quarterfinals by Barcelona 12-2 on aggregate.
Weir was named Real Madrid’s player of the season in 2023 and 2025 and Liga F player of the year in 2023. Last year, she became the first Scottish woman to be nominated for the Ballon d’Or.
On the international stage, Weir, who was appointed Scotland captain earlier this year, has earned 120 caps and scored 31 goals for her country.
