Giorgia Moll Dead: ‘Quiet American,’ ‘Contempt’ Actress Was 88
Giorgia Moll, the Italian actress known for her turns in Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s The Quiet American and Jean-Luc Godard’s Contempt, died June 2 in Rome, her family announced. She was 88.
Moll also appeared alongside American muscleman Steve Reeves in The White Warrior (1959) and The Thief of Baghdad (1961) and was a featured player in another notable Italian sword-and-sandal epic adventure, The Cossacks (1960).
Italian TV viewers remember the dark-haired Moll for her turns alongside Carlo Dapporto in Pasta del Capitano toothpaste sketches — “With that mouth, she can say whatever she wants” — that aired each night on the RAI advertising program Carosello that followed the 8 p.m. news.
In The Quiet American (1958), the first film adaptation of Graham Greene’s 1955 novel of the same name, Moll portrayed Phuong, a Vietnamese woman desired by an American citizen (Audie Murphy) and a British journalist (Michael Redgrave). It was shot in Saigon as the first feature made in Vietnam.
And she played Francesca, the secretary of the boorish American producer Jeremiah Prokosch (Jack Palance), in the New Wave classic Contempt (1963) that also starred Brigitte Bardot, Michel Piccoli and Fritz Lang.
Born in Rome on Jan. 14, 1938, to an Italian father and German mother, Moll worked as a model and made her film debut at age 17 in Non scherzare con le donne (1955). Two years later, she appeared in Mariti in città (1957), the first of several features she did with director Luigi Comencini.
She starred with Robert Preston, Tony Randall and Walter Matthau in Island of Love (1963) and also stood out in the Damiano Damiani-directed crime drama Lipstick (1960), Cover Girls (1963) and Dark Purpose (1964).
Moll recorded several singles in the 1960s and acted steadily through 1970 in films made in Italy, France and Germany before dedicating herself to photography. She made one final onscreen acting appearance in a 1985 Italian telefilm.

Adult Swim Takes ‘Heist Brothers’ To Series From Genndy Tartakovsky
EXCLUSIVE: In 2024, Dexter’s Laboratory creator Genndy Tartakovsky pitched the President of Adult Swim an idea for a show live on stage at Annecy.
Last year, we revealed that the show, Heist Safari, was in development, and today we can tell you it has been greenlit, now titled Heist Brothers.
Described as a “high-octane animated action comedy,” Heist Brothers tells the story of three frog brothers who rob a bank. “Seems simple enough, but the execution is special as !#&$??!!!!,” reads the logline.
The 10 x 15-minute series is now in production with Cartoon Network Studios.
Tartakovsky is an animation legend who has been at Annecy this year talking up upcoming content like Heist Brothers and Prime Video’s Conan the Barbarian. His other credits include Fixed, Samurai Jack and Hotel Transylvania.
Speaking to Deadline earlier this week, Adult Swim President Michael Ouweleen told us he is still seeking a project from Europe. His upcoming slate includes a Rick and Morty spin-off and an animated version of the late Anthony Bourdain’s graphic novel Get Jiro!
The Annecy International Animation Film Festival wraps tomorrow.

Secuoya Studios & William Levy Ready Drama Series & Romcom
Cuban-American star William Levy is staying in business with Spain’s Secuoya Studios.
The Montecristo and Camino a Arcadia actor and producer struck with the Spanish-language production giant, and is immediately in development with a scripted series and a feature film that Levy will both star in and executive produce. William Levy Entertainment and Secuoya have previously teamed for the likes of ViX series Under a Volcano and the Road to Arcadia.
From the new pact, the six-part series is billed as a thriller that will “blend action, suspense, and emotional drama, centering on a plot defined by the complex relationships between its characters.” No more plot details, but Carlos Portela and Roberto Serrano are the creators.
The feature film will see Levy return to the romantic comedy space where he previously had turns in the likes of South Beach Love, Café con Aroma de Mujer and Cinderelo. He will take on a lead role, though no plot details were forthcoming.
“William Levy has been part of some of the most iconic stories in our catalog and a key creative partner in the evolution of Secuoya Studios,” said José María Caro, Chief Content Officer at Secuoya Studios.
Caro recently joined Secuoya from HBO Max Spain, a move that came a month after Secuoya Studios CEO Brendan Fitzgerald exited.
“The results achieved by our joint projects in major international markets demonstrate the strength of a collaboration built on trust and a shared ambition to develop top-tier content. We are convinced that this new phase will allow us to continue driving stories with a tremendous capacity to connect with audiences.”
Levy pointed the role Secuoya had played in his career over recent years. “We have shared great projects, challenges, and successes, and I have always found a team committed to an approach to projects that closely aligns with my own,” he added. “I am very excited about this new phase.”
The pair’s shows have travelled internationally, with Montecristo running on the likes of Movistar Plus+ in Spain and Andorra, ViX in the U.S. and Latin America, Globo (Brazil), Imagine Media (Israel), ProTV (Romania and Moldova), TV2 Media Group (Hungary), and BTV Media Group (Bulgaria), alongside various agreements covering Eastern Europe.
Meanwhile, Camino a Arcadia rolled out on SkyShowtime in more than twenty European territories, and Bajo un Volcán went out through Netflix in Spain and several other territories. Later this year, the pair will premiere Bajo un Fuego, in which Levy stars and exec produces.
