Bandai Namco Apologizes for Sgt. Frog Film’s Unapproved Reference to Attack on Titan – Interest

©吉崎観音/KADOKAWA・劇場版ケロロ軍曹製作委員会
Bandai Namco Filmworks (BNF) and Bandai Namco Pictures (BNP) issued an apology on Thursday for unauthorized references to various intellectual properties in the latest Sgt. Frog film, Shin Gekijōban ☆ Keroro Gunsō Fukkatsu Shite Sokkō Chikyū Metsubō no Kiki de Arimasu! (New Sgt. Frog the Movie: The Earth Is in Mortal Peril as Soon as We Come Back!).
In particular, the rights holders for Hajime Isayama‘s Attack on Titan manga had clearly expressed their wishes on such a reference in advance, but a “serious communications breakdown” within BNF and BNP led to the film going ahead with the reference anyways.
BNF and BNP said, “We deeply apologize to all rights holders involved and to all fans of these works for the immense trouble and concern we have caused. As companies that create and protect works, our failure to give sincere and sufficient consideration to the responsibilities incumbent upon us is a matter we take seriously.”
The two companies further stated they will take measures to prevent the unauthorized use of intellectual properties in the future: “Moving forward, we will thoroughly review and tighten our internal verification systems to prevent further incidents.” Other measures the companies will take include “[strengthening] our management process even further to ensure confirmation from all relevant parties, including rights holders, is properly reflected in our work.”
BNF also issued an apology to the film’s production staff, Sgt. Frog creator Mine Yoshizaki, and Monthly Shōnen Ace magazine’s editors, and emphasized they were not reponsible for the incident. “We also deeply apologize for any trouble and concerns caused to everyone involved in the production of the work,” BNF states.
Shin Gekijōban ☆ Keroro Gunsō Fukkatsu Shite Sokkō Chikyū Metsubō no Kiki de Arimasu! opened in Japan on Friday

McDonald’s Commercials Welcome Summer with Mamoru Hosoda Films – Interest
McDonald’s Japan previewed a new set of commercials for its annual summer Big Mac campaign on Thursday, and it chose the perfect director to celebrate both nostalgia and summer. The “When You Say ‘Summer,’ Then and Now” commercials feature iconic scenes from Mamoru Hosoda films The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, and Wolf Children. This year’s gold-medal-winning figure-skater pair Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara and Sakurazaka46 idol group member Hikaru Morita also star in the commercials’ live-action segments.

The commercials revive Japan’s 1980s Coca-Cola jingle “I feel Coke” by Daisuke Inoue to promote the “strongest combo,” a Big Mac with Coca-Cola. The commercials (in 30-, 60-, and 120-second lengths) are available on the McDonald’s Japan YouTube channel (but not viewable outside of Japan). The commercial will start airing in Japan on June 30.
This is the second year in a row McDonald’s Japan has partnered with anime for its nostalgic summer Big Mac campaign. Last year, the campaign used clips from 1980s anime Maison Ikkoku, The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?, and Kimagure Orange Road. Maison Ikkoku creator Rumiko Takahashi and Macross franchise co-creator Shōji Kawamori gave messages in support of the campaign.

Kōhei Kadowaki’s We Are Aliens Anime Film to Open on September 25 – News
The distribution label TOHO NEXT and the production company NOTHING NEW announced on Saturday that they will open Kōhei Kadowaki and NOTHING NEW‘s We Are Aliens (Ware Ware wa Uchūjin) anime film throughout Japan on September 25. The two companies updated the previously released teaser trailer with the new date:

©NOTHING NEW, MIYU PRODUCTIONS
We Are Aliens centers on Tsubasa and Gyōtarō, two boys who as elementary school students became close friends, but jealousy and misunderstandings eventually drove them apart. Years have passed and the two boys have gone in different directions in life. But when the memories from their past come back, they must face what happened between them years ago.
The film stars Ryōta Bandō (Fureru., live-action How to Train Your Dragon’s Japanese dub) as Tsubasa, and Amane Okayama (Blue Giant, live-action I”s, Hirayasumi) as Gyōtarō, when both characters are young adults. Child actors Yūto Maki and Tasuku Nakagome — who were both selected through auditions — voice Tsubasa and Gyōtarō, respectively, when they were younger.
Kadowaki, who created the second BEASTARS season’s ending sequence and music videos for YOASOBI, served as the film’s planner, scriptwriter, director, storyboard artist, and editor. Yaffle, who previously produced music for Fujii Kaze, Kenshi Yonezu, and others, composed the music. NOTHING NEW planned and produced the upcoming film, and French studio Miyu Productions (Ghost Cat Anzu, A New Dawn) collaborated on the production, after joining on the project in June 2025.
The film screened at the Directors’ Fortnight of the Cannes Film Festival on May 14, and screened in competition at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, which began on Sunday, and is ending on June 27.
Sales company CHARADES licensed the film to the distributors Hooray Films in Taiwan, Shaw Organisation in Singapore, Intercontinental Film Distributors in Hong Kong, and Sahamongkol Film in Thailand. CHARADES is handling international sales of the film.
The staff launched a crowdfunding campaign in November on the Motion Gallery website. The campaign aimed to cover production and advertising costs, specifically to “improve the quality of the work” and to “distribute the film more widely.” The campaign ended on March 2 and exceeded its 8 million yen (about US$50,365) target and raised 9,604,510 (about US$60,467) yen.
NOTHING NEW is a small film company that was founded in 2022 with the aim “to create a world where talent is not crushed.”
