Argentine FA denies reports its president summoned by U.S. court

Published

on

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has denied reports that its president Claudio Tapia and treasurer Pablo Toviggino have been summoned to give evidence by a U.S. district court.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the AFA said a summons issued by the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida was instead addressed to a third party, which may be required to give evidence about AFA officials. The AFA did not name the third party.

Reports in Argentina claimed Tapia and Toviggino had been summoned to give evidence in a case related to the AFA’s alleged financial dealings. Some local outlets also reported that they were detained and questioned upon boarding a chartered flight carrying the Argentina squad, and that they had been asked to hand over their mobile phones and electrical devices by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

The AFA said these reports are “entirely false”.

“The subpoena issued by the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida is addressed to a third party, who is required to appear before a Grand Jury and potentially provide documentation and communications related to various individuals, including officials of this Association,” the AFA statement read.

“It is absolutely false to claim that Claudio Tapia or Pablo Toviggino have been subpoenaed to testify by the United States Justice system, just as it is false to claim that cell phones or any other electronic devices have been seized from them.”

In December, a federal probe into AFA’s finances led to a corruption case that implicated Tapia and Toviggino. The inquiry is focused on millions of allegedly misappropriated funds that are tied to AFA’s revenue dating back to 2023.

The AFA said the document issued to the third party “does not impose any personal measures” on Tapia or Toviggino, that it “does not order their appearance” at court, “does not impose any procedural obligation on them”, nor does it “record any seizure or confiscation of their property”.

The body added that by publishing what it deemed “inaccurate or deliberately distorted” information, the reputations of Tapia and Toviggino have been “unjustifiably” damaged.

“The AFA reserves the right to take all appropriate legal action in response to the dissemination of false or manifestly misleading information that infringes the rights of the organisation or its officials,” the statement said.

Commonwealth Games: Natalie Metcalf ruled out of England squad

Published

on

England’s Natalie Metcalf says it “will take some time to process fully” after she was ruled out of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow because of a calf injury.

The 33-year-old, who had returned to action last December following the birth of her daughter 14 months ago, picked up the issue on Monday and has been ruled out following scans.

Metcalf helped England win Commonwealth Games gold on the Gold Coast in Australia eight years ago and was the only player in the 2026 squad who featured in that 2018 triumph.

“I’m devastated to not be able to continue with the team,” said Metcalf, who has been replaced in the squad by Ella Clark.

“It’s been a very emotional couple of days and something that I think will take some time for me to process fully.”

The Roses, who are ranked third in the world, are in Pool A along with world number one-ranked Australia plus South Africa, Malawi, Tonga and Northern Ireland, against whom they begin their campaign on 25 July.

Metcalf, who captained the England side beaten by New Zealand in the bronze medal match at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, helped Manchester Thunder win the Netball Super League last season.

“We are all gutted for Nat. To receive this news so close to the Games is devastating, particularly given the incredible journey she has been on over the past 14 months,” said England head coach Anna Stembridge.

“Watching Nat navigate her return to court after becoming a mum has been nothing short of inspiring and we’re deeply disappointed she won’t be able to compete in Glasgow.”
