The Tyneside club also announced its men’s, women’s and under-21 sides will wear black armbands during their pre-season matches to honour Keegan, who guided the club to Premier League promotion in 1992-93 and second place in 1995-96.

A minute’s silence will be observed before Eddie Howe’s side are at Gateshead for a friendly this Saturday.

Keegan’s photo will be displayed on screens at St James’ Park in the seventh minute – a reference to the number seven shirt he wore as a player – when the men’s side face Bayer Leverkusen and Strasbourg on 15 and 16 August.

The same tribute will take place when the women’s team face Inter Milan on 16 August, giving supporters the chance to join a minute’s applause for the former England captain and manager.

Newcastle added it will consult Keegan’s family on plans for a permanent tribute.

In June, Keegan had revealed he had stage four cancer, which is the most advanced stage of cancer and means the disease has spread to other parts of the body.

His family initially disclosed he was battling the disease in January, after he had “further evaluation of ongoing abdominal symptoms” in hospital.

A statement on behalf of the Keegan family this week said he was “surrounded by his wife and daughters in his final moments”.

During an illustrious playing career, he also enjoyed spells at Scunthorpe United, Hamburg and Southampton before managing Newcastle, Fulham, England and Manchester City.

Middlesbrough is finalizing a deal to sign U.S. national team midfielder Sebastian Berhalter from the Vancouver Whitecaps, sources briefed on the deal tell The Athletic.

Berhalter, who is out of contract this winter, will make the move during the summer transfer window. Boro will pay a fee in the region of $2 million, sources say, rather than Berhalter walking for free in the winter. Around 6-10 clubs seriously pursued Berhalter this summer, sources add.

He was held out of the Whitecaps’ 4-3 loss to FC Cincinnati on Wednesday night as the deal advanced.

Berhalter, 25, featured for the United States at the World Cup this summer. He appeared in all five U.S. matches (one start) and scored a great goal vs. Turkey in the group stage, while adding an assist. He was named to the MLS Best XI in 2025 and has been one of the league’s best midfielders again in 2026, earning All-Star recognition.

Berhalter had five goals and 13 assists across all competitions from a box-to-box midfield role last season. He helped lead the Whitecaps to the Canadian Championship title, as well as helping guide the club to both MLS Cup final and the Concacaf Champions Cup final.

The son of former USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter, Sebastian made his national team debut under Mauricio Pochettino in the summer of 2025 and played his way onto the World Cup squad. He has 18 caps.

Berhalter joins fellow American midfielder Aidan Morris at Boro. Morris and Berhalter are close friends and former youth teammates from their days with the Columbus Crew.

Boro has been active around the American market, signing Morris as well as former Charlotte FC defender Adilson Malanda. The club had a bid rejected last year by the Crew for American wingback Max Arfsten.

Berhalter’s rise was one of the most pleasant stories in MLS over recent years. He was initially acquired by the Whitecaps for a nominal fee of $50,000 in general allocation money (a salary cap mechanism in MLS) in 2022. That is the smallest denomination of GAM that can be traded.

Since then, he developed into one of the league’s best midfielders, a World Cup player and, soon, one to debut in the Championship.

Former Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill said he has “no power” in his left leg nearly 10 months after suffering a gruesome knee injury on Sept. 29 last season when the Dolphins played against the New York Jets. Hill damaged multiple ligaments in his left knee, including his ACL.

Last month, Hill began to post videos on his YouTube channel as part of a mini-documentary series called “Cheetah, Reborn.” The first two episodes were short videos showing footage from various stages of his recovery over the past 10 months. The third episode, posted on Wednesday, is a five-minute video that includes Hill showing where he’s at in his recovery, what kind of exercises he’s doing and providing commentary.

“You know, they told me I may not be able to walk again,” Hill said. “The doctors were like, ‘Bro, we don’t know what’s going to happen with your future.’ And now look at me.”

The day after Hill suffered the injury last year, his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told WSVN-TV in Miami that he laid out an optimistic outlook for his client.

“There’s no nerve damage, no blood flow issues, no broken bones, the cartilage is fine. The goal is for him to be ready to play next season,” Rosenhaus said. “It’s only one surgical procedure. There was some concern that it might be more than one surgery, but right now everything went as well as we could’ve hoped for.”

In Wednesday’s video, Hill said he’s had two surgeries over the last 10 months, including an LCL surgery in February. He was explaining an exercise he was doing called “wall push-offs.”

“Where I’m at right now, I’m doing tempo,” Hill said. “I’m not supposed to be doing tempo runs, so don’t tell my rehab, but I like to challenge myself a little bit. Anyways, I’m doing some push-offs with my left leg. My left leg is the one that I injured. I have no power in my left leg at all, so I’m trying to regain all of the power back in my left leg.

“I’ve been activating the quads, the glutes, the hamstrings, the calves. I’ve been doing all of the stability work, all of the mobility work that I need to get my knee back right. But it’s one day at a time.”

Hill, 32, entered the league as a fifth-round pick of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2016. He spent his first six seasons in the NFL in Kansas City, where he was a three-time first-team All-Pro and helped the Chiefs to their first Super Bowl title of the Patrick Mahomes era and another Super Bowl appearance.

After the 2021 season, Hill was traded to the Miami Dolphins for a collection of draft picks, including a first- and second-round selection. He continued playing at a high level, including leading the league in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns in 2023. Hill was selected to the Pro Bowl eight consecutive seasons from 2016 through 2023.

Despite his on-field prowess, Hill’s career has also included a number of off-field issues, going back to his college football days at Oklahoma State. For the college incident, Hill pled guilty to domestic assault and battery by strangulation. He’s been investigated for multiple assault allegations during his NFL career. In 2024, Hill was famously detained outside of Hard Rock Stadium ahead of the Dolphins’ season opener. Hours later, Hill caught seven passes for 130 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown.

The Dolphins released Hill early in the offseason as they moved into a new era with a new general manager, head coach and quarterback. Hill had one year remaining on his contract with the Dolphins. According to his rehab video on Wednesday, Hill is eyeing a return to the NFL at some point.

“Just trying to get my explosion and my burst back, so whenever I step back on the field, it’s like none of it’s missing,” Hill said.

As for when that could be, with training camps across the league just days away and the 2026 regular season less than two months away, Hill didn’t have a clear answer.

“I ain’t going to tell you what my timeline is,” Hill said. “But timeline looking real good right now, man.”
