Jalen Carter, Eagles agree to 4-year, $152 million extension

The Philadelphia Eagles and defensive tackle Jalen Carter have agreed to a four-year, $152 million contract extension through 2031, Carter’s agent Drew Rosenhaus confirmed Tuesday.

The deal is worth up to $160 million, according to Rosenhaus, and $106 million is guaranteed, making Carter the highest-paid defensive tackle in NFL history.

The move ends any speculation about the franchise’s commitment to the 25-year-old, two-time Pro Bowler who was entering the fourth year of his rookie contract. The Eagles exercised Carter’s fifth-year option in April, which kept him under contract through 2027. But a lengthier deal was expected due to Carter’s talent and general manager Howie Roseman’s usual strategy of staying ahead of the calendar by signing core players to long-term deals early.

The Eagles drafted Carter with the No. 9 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, and he quickly emerged as a cornerstone player for a franchise with a deep history of high-level defensive tackles. His deal comes during the same offseason the Eagles signed Jordan Davis, also his teammate at Georgia, to a three-year, $78 million contract, giving the Eagles a foundation in the middle of their defensive line.

Although Carter’s statistics do not jump off the page — he has 13.5 sacks in three seasons — his effect on games is apparent with the way opposing offensive lines focus on him and how disruptive he is in critical moments such as on the final drive of the NFC divisional round win over the Los Angeles Rams in January 2025.

“Oh my gosh, that dude is just a monster,” linebacker Zack Baun said of Carter after that game. “The best in the league.”

Carter led the Eagles in pressures, quarterback hits and tackles for loss in 2024. He was limited to 11 games last season because of injuries to his shoulders and a Week 1 ejection.

The questions about Carter have often had little to do with the way he plays. He fell in the draft after he pleaded no contest to two misdemeanor charges of racing and reckless driving following a fatal car crash in January 2023 when he was at Georgia. He was ejected from the Eagles’ season-opening victory in 2025 for spitting at Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott before the opening snap. He’s also been involved in other on-field confrontations.

Behind the scenes, there’s been praise for Carter’s passion and football intelligence. The Eagles have maintained a high tolerance because of his high-ranking talent, and this commitment shows the franchise was comfortable with this type of investment. The Eagles are known to act quickly with contract extensions for cornerstone players — Jalen Hurts, DeVonta Smith, Landon Dickerson and Cam Jurgens signed new deals in recent seasons in their first offseasons eligible — so the wait for Carter’s new deal raised particular intrigue.
