Jake Connor starred as Super League leaders Leeds ran in eight tries in a 46-0 rout of Toulouse while Wigan Warriors remain just two points behind after their 20-8 win over Leigh Leopards.

Connor scored two of those tries himself and converted seven as the Rhinos ran up the score. Ned McCormack had an early try disallowed for a knock-on but it was merely a temporary stay of execution for Toulouse on a long night for the visitors.

Twelve minutes in Connor found a gap with the help of Riley Lumb to get the first, and it was then Connor who set up Mikolaj Oledzki for the second try of the night with a no-look pass. On the stroke of half-time Tom Holroyd added a third thanks to an offload from Presley Cassell.

The onslaught continued in the second half. James McDonnell found a gap four minutes after the restart, and just before the hour Leeds shifted the ball from wing to wing for Harry Newman to cross in the corner – although for the first time on the night Connor missed the conversion.

He made amends four minutes later by scoring his second try of the night, hauling in a catch before touching down. And Leeds kept on the pressure with late tries from Brodie Croft and Lumb padding an already lop-sided score-line.

Wigan keep in touch with key victory

Wigan made it 10 consecutive wins in all competitions as they beat neighbours Leigh Leopards 20-8.

It was a typically full-throttle encounter from the start, with the first points scored from the boot of Leigh’s Adam Cook after nine minutes following an infringement in front of the posts on Umyla Hanley.

The lead was extended to 6-0 five minutes later when the Leopards ended a period of pressure by working the ball out to Innes Senior on the left and he went over in the corner.

The Leopards threw bodies on the line to keep out Wigan as they tried to take advantage of a couple of errors from the hosts, and the visitors thought they had reduced the deficit with 29 minutes gone.

Jake Wardle broke from his own line and found Liam Marshall, who sprinted almost the length of the field to touch down in the corner, but Wardle was penalised for a push on Hanley following a video review. Cook chose to go for goal from the penalty and extended the lead to eight points.

Leigh’s defence had been exceptional but three minutes before the break they switched off as Field sprinted away following a penalty deep in his own half, breaking clean through the Leopards line and reaching the posts before anyone could catch him.

Harry Smith’s kick reduced the arrears further, and four minutes after the break the visitors took the lead. Jack Hughes tried an extra pass, Noah Hodkinson picked up the loose ball and found Bevan French, who ran in under the posts.

Leigh coach Adrian Lam’s expression darkened further in the 51st minute when his side were again made to pay dearly for a handling mistake, this time in-form Zach Eckersley intercepting and running away to the line.

And it was soon to get even worse, with smart handling from the Warriors after another Leopards error seeing Eckersley brilliantly play in Hodkinson for a fourth try in the corner.

Leigh tried to find a way back into the contest but Wigan stood firm to open up a six-point lead over their rivals and hand the Leopards a first defeat in six.

The other match on Friday saw Joe Burgess reach a career milestone of 200 tries after he scored twice in Hull KR’s 40-16 win against Bradford Bulls.

Hull KR led 16-10 at half time before Jez Litten, Tom Davies and Elliot Minchella all scored in the second half to send the reigning champions into the top four.
