Samantha Morton Says She’s Been Out of Work Since Filming ‘The Odyssey’
Samantha Morton revealed she hasn’t worked since wrapping Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” despite delivering one of the film’s most talked-about performances.
During an appearance on Josh Horowitz’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast on Monday, the actress, who plays Greek sorceress Circe opposite Matt Damon’s Odysseus, reflected on the politics of the industry and how it has changed in recent years.
“Hope and faith,” Morton said when asked what the recent critical acclaim has meant to her. “That I suppose if you keep at it, and you keep producing good work, and that the right people see it, then maybe you can carry on working.”
She continued: “I haven’t worked for a year since making ‘The Odyssey,’ you know, and I’ve got really good agents and a manager, but at the end of the day, I’m 49. I do believe I’m a good actor, [but] there are other good actors out there. Do you know what I mean? So, the politics of the industry has changed massively.”
Nonetheless, Morton shared that she felt confident that she’ll continue working well into her 80s. Though, elsewhere in the interview, Morton admitted she “cried” upon learning Nolan wanted to meet with her for “The Odyssey” – having previously missed out on a chance to be in his 2006 film, “The Prestige.”
“I think that life and art have a really bizarre way of intertwining and what’s for you won’t pass you,” she added. “But sometimes it’s hard to know that in the time, because there have been times when things haven’t worked out and I’ve been very sad both creatively and financially because I have three children and a mortgage and [a] life.”
Yet, Morton stood by the idea that “if you are earnest” and “have dignity and compassion” that success will follow. However, she encouraged others to “cherish” these moments forever, as “they’re few and far between.”
Morton has emerged as one of the stand-out performers from the stacked ensemble cast of “The Odyssey,” garnering early awards season buzz for only about 10 minutes of screentime.
Outside of her work in “The Odyssey,” Morton is best known for her work in independent films, including Woody Allen’s “Sweet and Lowdown” and Jim Sheridan’s “In America,” which earned her Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actress and Best Actress, respectively. She’s also known for her performances in 2002’s “Minority Report,” 2016’s “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” AMC’s “The Walking Dead” and Starz’s “The Serpent Queen.”
Morton is set next to appear in Lisa Mulcahy’s “Love and War,” according to her IMDb.

Banijay Germany Reveals Structure, Leaders Post-All3Media Merger
Banijay has set out the structure and management team for its German operations in the wake of its merger with All3Media closing.
There was crossover in Banijay and All3Media’s operations in the huge German market, with the combined outfit home to several well-known production labels and execs.
The newly merged biz will be called Banijay Germany. Arno Schneppenheim joins the Banijay board as Chief Creative Officer and also takes on the management of EndemolShine Germany from September 1. Ute März remains co-managing director.
Schneppenheim headed the Comedy & Light Entertainment unit at EndemolShine Germany from 2009 to 2018 and was the founding Managing Director of Florida TV, which was backed by EndemolShine.
Schneppenheim will serve as CCO alongside Knut Kremling, who is COO, and Michael Laegel, who is CFO, all under the leadership of Marcus Wolter, Banijay Germany CEO.
Elsewhere, Vittorio Valente will lead the former All3Media German labels filmpool entertainment, filmpool fiction, and South&Browse, as well as the Magic Connection agency. He becomes CEO of the labels under the filmpool united banner.
Katrin Stefanović becomes the sole managing director at the Banijay Productions label having previously shared the MD role with Schneppenheim.
“Both Banijay and All3Media stand for building and growing companies with their own DNA, spirit, and independent positioning, driven by strong production personalities,” Wolter said.
“The stars are the companies within the group – not the group itself. Now we are setting the course for the next stage of Banijay’s evolution with an exceptional new leadership team.”
Banijay Germany’s labels include Brainpool, Banijay Productions, EndemolShine, MadeFor, filmpool fiction, filmpool entertainment and South&Browse.
The executive shuffle comes after news from earlier today that former EndemolShine Germany co-MD Fabian Tobias has left to run rival banner ITV Studios Germany.
Expect more exec comings and goings and restructuring as Banijay sets its management teams post-merger. Germany was one of the big pieces to resolve given the size of the market and the overlap in operations.

Warner Bros Korea Sets September Release For ‘The Intern’ Remake
Warner Bros Korea has set a September 16 release date for its remake of 2015 hit comedy The Intern, with Choi Min-sik and Han So-hee in the roles played by Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway in the original film.
Choi, known internationally from Korean films including Oldboy, The Admiral: Roaring Currents and recent hit Exhuma, is playing an older intern working at a fashion startup in the highly-anticipated film. Han, who starred in Netflix’s Gyeongseong Creature, plays the young fashion entrepreneur whose startup has become a huge success within three years of launch.
Produced by Anthology Studio and Warner Bros Korea, the Korean remake is directed by Kim Do-young, whose credits include Kim Ji-young: Born 1982, about the pressures faced by Korean women in the workforce, and romantic drama Once We Were Us (itself a remake of Chinese film Us And Them, directed by Rene Liu).
Warner Bros Korea also dropped a poster (see above) while announcing the release date today. The film will open in the run-up to Korea’s Chuseok holiday (September 24-26), a three-day public holiday that is one of the territory’s peak box office periods.
The original film, directed by Nancy Meyers, grossed more than $194M worldwide, five times its budget, and drew a huge following among audiences in Korea.
An Indian remake was also announced in 2020, set to star Deepika Padukone and Amitabh Bachchan, although there hasn’t been any news from that production since Padukone announced last year that she was stepping away from the acting role but would remain on board as a producer.

Spotify Hits 300 Million Premium Subscribers in Q2
- Spotify grew total revenue 14% to €4.8 billion on earnings of €2.61 per share.
- Wall Street was expecting revenue of €4.79 billion on earnings of €2.80 per share.
- Shares of the music streaming giant fell over 4% in pre-market trading on Tuesday following the results
Spotify hit a premium subscriber milestone of 300 million globally after adding a total of 7 million in its second quarter, representing 9% growth year over year.
Meanwhile, the company added 16 million monthly active users for a total of 777 million, or growth of 12%, coming in slightly below guidance of 17 million additions, which was attributed to ongoing “product optimizations.” Ad-supported MAUs climbed 14% to 494 million.
Operating profit grew 61% to €655 million, while revenue increased 14% to €4.8 billion. The company posted net income of €545 million, compared to a net loss of €86 million in the year-ago period.
The latest quarterly results come as Spotify made several new announcements during its Investor Day presentation in May, including creator memberships, Personal Podcasts and its Reserved ticket offering.
It also unveiled new higher-hour add-on tiers for the platform’s audiobook option, Family and Student audiobook plans and Studio by Spotify Labs. In addition, Spotify and Universal Music Group reached a licensing deal that would enable fans to legally create covers and remixes from participating artists’ and songwriters’ catalogs, with both the original performing artist and songwriter sharing in the value created.
