Julie Andrews has confirmed she is breaking away from The Princess Diaries and won’t be reprising her role of Queen Clarisse Renaldi in the third installment.

In several new interviews, Andrews has reiterated she won’t be part of the third installment of the franchise she co-starred in with Anne Hathaway.

“I’m not going to be in it,” Andrews told Today.com when asked if she would be in the new sequel. “I think the story is slightly different, and I’m not quite sure how they’re dealing with that. But it’s too late for me to do it. I think the story has to continue in Princess Mia. It’s her story. It’s not really mine.”

In a separate interview with InStyle, Andrews said she “passed” on taking part in the new Princess Diaries movie, saying, “I think I’m retired, really, would be about the best description for that. [The film’s creative team] asked me all last year if I would be keen to do it. It was very very hard to say ‘no,’ but I did because I thought I had a wonderful ride, and this one I felt would flourish very well and wouldn’t need Granny going in there at my age.”

Andrews’ decision not to return for the third installment of the film series is not entirely surprising, as she echoed a similar sentiment after the movie was confirmed in 2022.

“I think we know that it’s probably not going to be possible,” Andrews told Access Hollywood. “It was talked about very shortly after [the second sequel] came out, but it’s now how many years since then? And I am that much older, and Annie the princess, or queen, is so much older. And I am not sure where it would float or run.”

The Princess Diaries originally came out in 2001 with Garry Marshall directing Andrews and Anne Hathaway. The coming-of-age comedy was based on the popular Meg Cabot novel series with Mia Thermopolis, played by Anne Hathaway, at the center of the story. Mia is a teenager from San Francisco who discovers that she is the heir apparent to the throne of Genovia. A sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, was released three years later, in 2004, with both Andrews and Hathaway reprising their roles.

EXCLUSIVE: Nicholas Hoult is still in his villain era. The Superman star has been tapped as a high-profile cast addition to the upcoming second season of HBO’s Harry Potter series. He will play Gilderoy Lockhart, a major character in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, who was portrayed in the second movie by Kenneth Branagh.

Greenlighted in May, Season 2 of Harry Potter is scheduled to begin filming this fall, ahead of the Christmas premiere of Season 1, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. It will air on HBO and be available to stream exclusively on HBO Max.

Dominic McLaughlin stars as the titular Hogwarts wizard. Alastair Stout plays Harry’s best friend Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton portrays bookworm Hermione Granger. Key original cast members also include Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall.

Hoult’s Gilderoy Lockhart a notoriously vain, boastful and fame-obsessed wizard well versed in Memory Charms who is recruited by Dumbledore as Professor of Defence Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts. A five-time winner of Witch Weekly’s Most Charming Smile Award, Lockhart authored many books on dark creatures and his supposed encounters with them.

Season 1 of the series, based on J.K. Rowling’s hugely popular books, is written and executive produced by showrunner Gardiner. Mark Mylod serves as executive producer and directed multiple episodes. Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films also executive produce the series, produced by HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television.

Jon Brown, who is a writer on the first season, has been elevated to co-showrunner for Season 2 alongside Season 1 showrunner Gardiner.

This marks English actor Hoult’s third major TV series role following the British teen drama Skins and the Hulu comedy The Great, which earned him an Emmy and Golden Globe nominations.

Hoult plays Lex Luthor in Superman, a role he is reprising in the upcoming Man Of Tomorrow. Other antagonists he has recently played include Bob Mathews in The Order, Tyler in The Menu and Peter III in The Great. Hoult, who also recently starred in Juror #2 and Nosferatu, will next be seen in Amazon MGM Studios’ How To Rob a Bank, which opens in November. He is repped by 42, UTA and Sloane Offer.

CBS Sports has yet to decide whether Tony Romo will return to the broadcast booth following his DUI arrest last month, with network chief David Berson saying Tuesday there is “no timetable” for a final decision.

“It’s an evolving situation, and therefore we’re still investigating,” Berson said Tuesday at CBS Sports’ annual NFL season preview event in New York. “There is no timetable or final decision at this time.”

As TheWrap previously reported, CBS Sports placed Romo on leave “until further notice” on July 31 following his arrest in Milwaukee, Wis. on suspicion of operating while intoxicated. The network named J.J. Watt to join Jim Nantz and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson on its No. 1 NFL broadcast team during Romo’s absence.

Berson said Tuesday that CBS is considering the potential impact on the network as it weighs Romo’s future.

“We have to consider the impact on our image and our brand,” Berson said. “That’s very important to us. Whether the games, marketing, PR, social, the focus should be, and needs to be, on our presentation and this great product, and not on any other factors.”

Romo was arrested July 23 after Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office deputies stopped his vehicle on Interstate 43. He was cited on suspicion of operating while intoxicated, as well as for an open-container violation and unsafe passing. Under Wisconsin law, a first-offense OWI is generally treated as a civil rather than criminal offense.

A court date is scheduled for Sept. 21, after the start of CBS’ NFL season.

Berson said the timing of the situation contributed to the network’s decision to move forward with Watt in the lead booth while Romo remains sidelined.

“Fortunately, we have a very deep bench, and I’m really proud of the way everyone’s stepping up and responding,” Berson said.

Romo joined CBS Sports in 2017 following his retirement from the Dallas Cowboys and has served as the network’s lead NFL analyst alongside Nantz. He signed a 10-year contract reportedly worth $180 million in 2020.
