Netflix Snaps Up Iconic Turkish Drama ‘Fatmagül’ for Latin America

Netflix has swooped for Fatmagül, snagging the iconic Turkish drama series for Latin America.

Telenovelas originated in Latin America, but Turkey has also emerged as a production hotspot for the soapy melodramas, which typically run to dozens of episodes. Fatmagül is one of the best examples out of Turkey, remaining popular more than a decade after it first bowed on free TV.

Produced by Istanbul-based Ay Yapim, it originally aired on the Turkish Kanal D channel. Kanal D International, the broadcaster’s sales arm, has gone on to sell the show into over 150 countries, making it one of the series that helped establish Turkish drama internationally. It has also been formatted internationally and remade locally in both Spain and India.

Netflix has now acquired it for Lat-Am. It will stream from August 19 across the region including Brazil. It will be available with Spanish and Portuguese dubs.

The series follows a young woman from a poor family and her journey to rebuild her life after she is assaulted, and the crime is subsequently covered up. The original show ran to two seasons spanning 80 episodes. International buyers have sometimes shortened the individual instalments, creating seasons with more episodes than in the original Turkish format.
