Seahawks, Devon Witherspoon agree to 4-year, $132 million extension: Sources

The Seattle Seahawks have locked up another young star, agreeing to a four-year, $132 million extension Saturday with cornerback Devon Witherspoon, according to league sources with knowledge of the deal, but weren’t authorized to speak publicly.

The deal will make Witherspoon the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.

Earlier this offseason, the Seahawks made Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who was drafted 15 picks after Witherspoon in the first round in 2023, the NFL’s highest-paid wide receiver. Seattle picked up both players’ fifth-year options in March, putting them under contract through 2027. Before the extension, Witherspoon was due to make $5.1 million in 2026 and $21.2 million in 2027.

The Seahawks drafted Witherspoon with the No. 5 pick in 2023, the highest selection during general manager John Schneider’s 17-year tenure with Seattle. The 25-year-old has not disappointed, earning Pro Bowl honors in all three seasons and a second-team All-Pro selection in 2025. Witherspoon was also named one of the franchise’s 50 greatest players ahead of the 2025 season.

Despite nabbing only two interceptions in 43 career games, Witherspoon’s impact on the Seahawks has been obvious. He has played outside and in the slot on both sides of the formation, collecting 32 pass breakups, 16 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks and nine QB hits in his career. In the Seahawks’ three-game playoff run last season, he had four pass breakups and racked up a sack and three QB hits — one of which forced Uchenna Nwosu’s game-sealing pick six — in the Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots.

Witherspoon is also one of the team’s emotional leaders and a conduit to the defense for coach Mike Macdonald, who praised Witherspoon and Smith-Njigba when speaking at the NFL’s annual spring meeting in Phoenix in March.

“I think what gets lost is what their role is as leaders on our team and how young they are,” Macdonald said. “That’s a unique combination of their impact on the team, but also, they’ve only been here three years, so the opportunity to really lay a great foundation for the next 10 years is there. It’s really exciting.”

Along with left tackle Charles Cross, the Seahawks have now signed three first-round picks from the 2022 and 2023 draft classes to extensions, after not extending any first-rounders from Schneider’s first 12 drafts (2010-21).
