Jamal Musiala has revealed that he is being treated for a “neurological dysfunction” after fainting in two successive Bayern Munich games.

On Tuesday, Musiala, 23, collapsed a few minutes after coming on as a substitute in Bayern’s pre-season friendly against Heidenheim. That followed a similar incident on Saturday, when the German international midfielder left the field after passing out in almost identical fashion during another friendly, against RB Leipzig in Munich.

On each occasion, club doctors rushed onto the pitch in response and Musiala was surrounded by teammates to protect his privacy. He was able to walk off the pitch on each occasion, albeit appearing dazed.

Following the latest incident on Tuesday, which occurred in the 69th minute of the game in Heidenheim, Musiala released a statement on his Instagram account, confirming the condition.

“I’ve been diagnosed with temporary, brief, but easily treatable absence seizures, which are due to a neurological dysfunction. These can lead to the recent incidents, like the one against Leipzig or now in Heidenheim.

“I know these things might seem scary at first glance – but for me, they’re currently part of my everyday life. I’m receiving the best medical treatment and am very optimistic.”

Musiala also used the statement to alleviate concerns from fans.

“Importantly, there is no further health risk,” he wrote.

“In close consultation and regular communication with the experts, it was my personal wish to take on this challenge and, with the clearance from the neurologists, to continue focusing on what helps me most in my recovery: simply living my everyday life and pursuing my passion for playing football. I have taken responsibility for this. Overall, I have a very good feeling and am on the right track.”

Bayern are due to begin the domestic season on Saturday, when they will face Borussia Dortmund in the German Super Cup. The club have not made any comment as to whether Musiala will be considered for that game.
