EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Los Angeles Chargers starting center Tyler Biadasz was carted off the field Tuesday during a joint practice with the San Francisco 49ers.
Biadasz suffered an apparent left leg injury when a 49ers player was pushed into his lower half. Trainers treated Biadasz for a couple minutes before the cart came out. He had to be helped onto the cart and could not put any weight on his leg.
Rookie Jake Slaughter took over for Biadasz as the center working with quarterback Justin Herbert.
The Chargers signed Biadasz to a three-year, $30 million contract this offseason. He was perhaps the biggest splash the Chargers made in free agency, and he was expected to provide a massive upgrade over center play from the first two seasons under coach Jim Harbaugh. Bradley Bozeman was the previous starter.

Slaughter played center exclusively in college at Florida. The Chargers had been playing Slaughter at left guard and center in camp, though he has looked more comfortable at center, his natural position. The Chargers have a clear answer if Biadasz suffered a long-term injury. But losing Biadasz would still dampen the momentum for a team with Super Bowl aspirations.
