The official website for the television anime of Yui Hata‘s manga adaptation of Nikita Kitagawa‘s Saijakuna Boku wa “Kabenuke Bug” de Nariagaru: Kabe o Surinuketara, Shokai Clear Hōshū o Mugen Kaishū Dekimashita! (I, The Weakest Player, Will Rise to the Top Using a “Wall-Clipping Glitch” – By Clipping Through Walls, I Earned the First-Time Clear Reward Infinite Times!) novel series revealed on Friday the anime will debut in 2027. The website also revealed the main cast and staff, and a teaser visual.

The anime will star Riko Aono as Anri and Momoka Terasawa as Elelet (character name romanizations are not confirmed).

Haruki Kasugamori (Dragon Goes House-Hunting, Tono to Inu) is directing the anime at Durandal and Tengu Kobou. Hiroshi Hosokawa (Otherworldly Munchkin) is overseeing the series scripts, and Hiroshi Miyamoto (Saint Seiya: Legend of Sanctuary, Eiga Precure Dream Stars!) and Sumakidori (Miru: Paths To My Future) are designing the characters.

The series follows Anri, who is a weak young adventurer trying to earn money for his younger sister. Anri’s weak “Evasion” skill gets him kicked out of his party. However, he discovers a glitch that allows him to use “Evasion” to clip through walls and earn the first-time clear reward infinite times. By doing this, he rises from the bottom by boosting his stats and collecting rare items.

Kitagawa debuted the web novel on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō website in February 2021. The light novels launched in June 2022 with illustrations by Meto Sasame. The second volume shipped in May 2024.

Hata began a manga adaptation in Kodansha‘s Shōnen Magazine R in July 2022 until the magazine ended publication in January 2023. The manga moved to Kodansha‘s Magazine Pocket app that same month. Kodansha published the manga’s 12th volume on July 9.

From Visual Novels to RPGs: An Adult Game for Every Gamer

Published

on

While adult games, or games that feature explicitly erotic or even pornographic content, tend to be discussed as a genre of work all their own, this is a deeply reductive framing and ignores that human sexuality can be expressed and explored in a variety of different formats. Instead, it’s much more accurate and beneficial to discuss adult games as a subcategory of more traditional gaming genres, such as adventure games, bullet hells, visual novels, and search action titles. Beyond the stigma that already exists for sexually explicit media, this linguistic hiccup plays a significant role in adult games getting sequestered in mainstream discourse as they’re treated as their own separate canon rather than an interpretation of more openly discussed genres.

With this status quo in mind, below are seven adult games tied to distinct mainstream gaming genres to give gamers of different preferences and disciplines an easier path forward to engage with the versatile and mechanically iterative sub-genre that comprises “adult games.”

For the Bullet Hell Hedonists: Butt Knight

clipboard-1786565598729.png

Butt Knight, which derives its name from the main character who has a prominent, butt-shaped chin (and is also named Butt Knight), is a vertically scrolling bullet hell à la the formative Batsugun and many of the Touhou Project titles. Quite a bit more approachable than its bullet hell contemporaries, this game is more narratively and structurally informed by the Ghosts ‘n Goblins series. Taking the role of Butt Knight, the player will progress across a vaguely medieval fantasy world and save maidens captured by various evil forces, usually earning lewd cutscenes in exchange for clearing a level with a high enough score.

The first of several Critical Bliss titles on this list, Butt Knight feels special because of how it engages with the culture, community, and memes present in eroge spaces. There’s a reference in this game to the Pokémon Hypno and its prevalence in Rule 34 communities thanks to its creepy design and hypnosis powers that absolutely floored me, as I never expected this to be referenced anywhere outside of smutty social media posts. If the white-knuckle, bullet-hell action of Butt Knight isn’t enough to keep players around, the acknowledgment that there’s a whole community and shared language between internet adult content enjoyers will motivate players to hit the credits screen.

For the Match (Three) Makers: HuniePop

clipboard-1786565727875.png

Chances are that, if you’re reading this article, you’ve already heard of the biggest adult game of 2015, HuniePop. A downright viral hit, the game quickly popped off on social media and streaming platforms thanks to its crass, raunchy humor and match-three puzzle gameplay, which had become increasingly popular thanks to older trending titles like Candy Crush. The end result was a gaming cocktail that blends South Park-style irreverent humor, a freshly addicting gameplay loop, and anime titties that felt unstoppable in 2015, and is still a joy to return to today.

With HuniePop’s low barrier to entry and breezy progression pace, it’s an easy adult game to recommend to gamers of all disciplines and experience levels. While the sequel HuniePop 2 – Double Date unfortunately loses a part of the original’s winning formula by removing the dating sim progression structure, there’s no shortage of match-three adult games and the cream of that crop should be easy to find once HuniePop is in your Steam algorithm.

For the Fujoshi Fanatics: Hashihime of the Old Book Town

clipboard-1786565752904.png

While visual novels are often considered to be synonymous with adult games, there’s a pretty wide array of content that falls under this umbrella; both in the vanilla and spicy varieties. Case in point, Hashihime of the Old Book Town is a BL visual novel published by Manga Gamer that combines murder-mystery intrigue with steamy gay sex scenes. Making a strong first impression with an art style that contains nothing short of a smoldering sexuality, this title also includes multiple ends, which provide plenty of motivation to play through its story multiple times.

Chances are, if you’re a fan of homoerotic murder mysteries, you’ve already played Hashihime of the Old Book Town. However, for everyone who falls outside of this game’s target demo, this is just about the best introduction to visual novels and BL media that a person could ask for. While folks tend to be fairly take it or leave it with queer erotic media, I would very much encourage any hetero folks reading this article to branch out of their comfort zone and give this game a chance.

For Otoge Otaku: Fxxx Me Royally!! Horny Magical Princess

clipboard-1786565774698.png

While Hashihime of the Old Book Town is explicitly for people who want to see beautiful men making out, Fxxx Me Royally!! Horny Magical Princess is for the folks who personally want to make out with them via a femme-coded main character. Further demonstrating the juxtaposition between this otome game and the previous BL noir, Fxxx Me Royally!! Horny Magical Princess is a much breezier playthrough that leans into tropes and gags that will feel familiar to anime fans new and old.

Beyond demonstrating the breadth of adult games that focus on romancing male characters, Fxxx Me Royally!! Horny Magical Princess is a delight, and exactly as fun as its raunchy, pun-of-a-name would suggest. While there are plenty of extremely accessible inroads to visual novels nowadays, this title is a great way to take the plunge into one of the most overlooked genres in gaming.

For the Throwback Baddies: Aurelia

clipboard-1786565798787.png

While Aurelia entices prospective players with visuals that are evocative of classic PC adventure games, there is so much more going on under the hood of this amorous adventure game! Another Critical Bliss title, Aurelia, is as much a slice-of-life game à la Stardew Valley as it is a familiar fantasy adventure. Beginning with the main character inheriting a cottage from his childhood (that Stardew Valley comparison runs DEEP!), the player quickly finds themselves with a wealth of relationships and gameplay systems to manage. You can run a brothel, go on quests and battle with rudimentary RPG combat, and partake in a variety of mini-games such as serving drinks at a tavern or keeping invading demons away in real-time with a bow and arrow.

While sexual content has long been a part of the adventure game genre courtesy of titles like the Leisure Suit Larry franchise, Aurelia feels like a game that’s matured along with the rest of this art form. The commitment to this specific artistic style makes Aurelia nothing short of endearing, and the scope of gameplay and erotic options is impressive for a title currently selling for less than twenty dollars. If you have even an ounce of nostalgia for games with this visual direction, or whose moment-to-moment gameplay is largely a series of narratively connected mini-games, chances are you want to play Aurelia regardless of its erotic content.

For the Role Players: Meltys Quest

clipboard-1786565825588.png

An erotic offering from developer Remtairy and made using RPG Maker, Meltys Quest feels like one of the few erotic takes on RPG staples like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy to actually explore what an adult take on this kind of game looks like mechanically as well as thematically. Taking the role of Princess Melty, who is tasked with saving her father’s kingdom despite her stereotypical gyaru tendencies, Meltys Quest will instantly feel familiar to those acquainted with erotic fantasy fiction. Not content to simply be a “Bad End” take on RPGs like many of its contemporaries, Meltys Quest features equipable outfits that affect gameplay as well as titillate, combat that requires at least some degree of mechanical mastery to progress, and an array of kinky status ailments including pregnancy!

Meltys Quest is not going to rank among the best turn-based role-playing games of all time, but it is one of the most thoughtful and iterative adult takes on this kind of gameplay. While we as a society don’t talk nearly enough about the overlap between people and crunchy game mechanics and kinky sexual proclivities, you know if you’re in this demographic and Meltys Quest is made for you specifically!

For the Metroidvania Masochists: FlipWitch: Forbidden Sex Hex

clipboard-1786565859626.png

So good that there’s a sequel in the works, Momo Games developed and Critical Bliss published FlipWitch: Forbidden Sex Hex, a search action game with a platforming emphasis, and boss fights against largely stationary giant enemies evocative of Cuphead. Based around the core mechanic of the player character being a “FlipWitch” who is able to gender bend between an adorable twink wizard and a high femme bimbo witch to change the world state and progress the story, this game is a great reminder that things like gender and gender expression are principally meant to be fun and flippant.

With the default tone of metroidvanias being rather dark and incredibly self-serious, FlipWitch feels like a welcome breath of fresh air. Beyond engaging with a topic as socially contentious as gender with an inspiring amount of earned confidence, FlipWitch is a robust enough search action game to scratch that itch for fans left waiting for a new traditional Metroid or Castlevania (or Bloodstained!) title. Even if it lacks the depth and prestige of other titles in this space, FlipWitch has more than enough charm to hang with the best of this bunch!

The official website for the television anime of Asari Endō‘s Magical Girl Raising Project Restart light novel series revealed on Friday the anime will debut on October 5. The anime will air on TV Tokyo on October 5 late at night at 2:00 a.m. (effectively October 6), and then on AT-X and BS Fuji on October 7.

Hiroyuki Hashimoto returns from the first Magical Girl Raising Project anime as the director. Takao Yoshioka is returning to write the script. Masako Itou (Magical Girl Raising Project SD character designer) is designing the characters for the new anime based on original designs by Maruino. Satoki Iida is returning as sound director. Synergy SP is the new animation studio, replacing Lerche that animated the previous Magical Girl Raising Project anime. Minori Chihara performs the anime’s opening theme song “No tears here.” Daisy×Daisy performs the ending theme song “ReMind.”

The first 12-episode Magical Girl Raising Project anime premiered in Japan on the AT-X channel in October 2016, and Crunchyroll streamed the series as it aired.

Endō’s Mahō Shōjo Ikusei Keikaku light novel series is set in a world where a social game called The Magical Girl Raising Project allows one in tens of thousands of people to be a “magical girl” — possessing extraordinary physical capabilities and looks, as well as special magical powers that set them apart from the rest of the human race. But one day, in a district containing 16 magical girls, the administration announces that it must halve the number of magical girls to solve the problem of magical energy. At first, the 16 magical girls race to collect more “magical candy” than their competitors, but the rules quickly become twisted, and it quickly becomes a murderous battle for survival among them.
