Oliver Glasner says Nottingham Forest must ‘accept reality’ of their position: ‘There is no messiah’

Published

on

Nottingham Forest must “accept the reality” of where they are, says Oliver Glasner, as he looks to inspire an improvement from last season’s fight against relegation.

The Austrian, who was appointed as head coach in July after leaving Crystal Palace, warned that he was not a magician or “messiah”, as Forest suffered a second consecutive defeat to Leeds United, which this time saw them lose 2-0 in the Carabao Cup.

Glasner conceded that Daniel Farke’s side had deserved to win but pointed out that they are further ahead in their development as a side and pledged that Forest would work hard to resolve this.

“We have to accept the reality. When you play Leeds twice and lose twice, it means that Leeds are further along than we are right now. That is the reality,” Glasner said in his press conference. “It is up to us. We are the only ones who can change this. This is what we have to do and what we will do.

“We will work, we will stick together, but we must also accept the reality. Nine months of a relegation battle, losing your top midfielder (Elliot Anderson, who moved to Manchester City for £116m) and now we have had six weeks together — the reality is that there is no magician, no messiah there is just hard work.”

Glasner is convinced Forest do have the quality to improve.

“This is what we have to do. It does not make sense to be talking about finishing seventh just over a year ago,” he said. “But if you deny or ignore the reality, then you live in a dreamland. That is not the best thing to do.

“On the other side, this is a massive opportunity for everyone to be a part of this journey; of this process. I have trust in the players, they are good lads and good players. But, right now, Leeds are further ahead. (It is) our responsibility and our job is to change this.”

Forest have agreed a club-record £45million deal to sign Liam Delap from Chelsea, with a further possible £5million in add-ons, but Glasner was not drawn on the topic when asked if the performance underlined why they might need such a player, preferring to add “no comment”.

“Last season told everyone what is needed. Not tonight. Last season told the truth,” he said. “Leeds have been together for two or three years. They are very aggressive, they have a clear structure. Maybe we needed this.

“Right now, we are far away from where we want to be. It’s in these situations when it becomes emotional I always go back to the facts. The fact is that this team had a relegation battle for nine months, very turbulent season and it ended with a huge effort to stay in the league.”

Forest are next in action against Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday.
