‘9 To 5: The Musical’ Cast Pays Tribute To Dolly Parton: “Our Deepest Thanks For The Music, Laughter & Joy She Gave Us”
The cast of the UK production of 9 to 5: The Musical paid tribute to Dolly Parton during their show on Tuesday, August 25.
Before the musical began, star Karla Tracey took a moment to honor Parton and announce to the audience that the country icon had died.
“Before we begin tonight’s performance of 9 to 5, we would like to take a moment to remember the remarkable Dolly Parton, who has sadly passed away today,” Tracey said to audible gasps from the audience that were learning of Parton’s death.
Tracey continued, “9 to 5 was originally written and produced by Dolly, whose extraordinary talent, creativity, and spirit are woven into every part of this work. Tonight, we will perform the piece as she intended, with great respect and affection for the woman whose vision brought it to life.”
In the Landmark Productions of the 9 to 5 musical, Tracey plays Doralee Rhodes, the same character Parton played in the 1980 film.
“Our thoughts are with Dolly’s family, friends, and all those around the world who loved and admired her,” Tracey said. “So, as we begin, we dedicate tonight’s performance to Dolly Parton with our deepest thanks for the music, laughter, and joy she gave us.”
Parton died at the age of 80, and her rep confirmed to People that the country legend had a “brief battle with cancer.”
Parton’s 9 to 5 co-stars took to social media to remember the country star, with Tomlin sharing a photo and captioning the Instagram post, “No words…”
Fonda also shared a photo with Parton and said, “I am devastated.”
“Dolly will always be with us because she was so present, so powerful, so generous and playful that she is woven into all our lives and hearts forever,” Fonda wrote.
Parton was developing a new musical featuring some of her hit songs, set to begin previews later this year at the St. James Theatre in New York City.
