Ipswich Town are working on a loan deal for Aston Villa striker Tammy Abraham.

The 28-year-old only signed a four-and-a-half year contract with the club in January after joining from Besiktas in a €21million (£18m; $24.2m) deal.

He struggled to nail down a starting spot in Unai Emery’s side, however, scoring only twice in 16 appearances in the second half of the campaign.

The Athletic reported in July that Villa were listening to offers for him this summer.

If a move progresses Abraham would be the second striker departure from Villa Park with Ollie Watkins set to leave for Al Hilal. The England international said his goodbyes to team-mates and staff on Thursday ahead of completing a £50m move to the Saudi Pro League club.

Villa are working to replace both players with Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson and Rafael Leao of AC Milan the chosen targets.

Abraham is in his second spell with Villa, having spent the 2018-19 season on loan from Chelsea, when he helped the club to Championship promotion via the play-offs and finished as the second tier’s third-highest goalscorer.

Since leaving Chelsea in August 2021, Abraham spent four-and-a-half years in Italy and Turkey, with Roma, Milan and Besiktas. His three years in Rome was the longest of those spells, as he recorded 37 goals and 13 assists in 120 appearances.

Abraham rose to prominence in Frank Lampard’s Chelsea team during the 2019-20 season, when he received regular game-time, with the club unable to make signings that summer. He scored 15 times in 34 Premier League appearances, his strongest-ever return in the English top-flight.

Having represented England up to under-21 level, Abraham earned his first senior cap in November 2017. He has made 11 international appearances.

Ipswich have enjoyed a busy summer after securing promotion back to the Premier League with 12 new arrivals at Portman Road including Julio Enciso, Emersonn, Abdul Fatawu and Sasa Lukic.
