Newcastle confirm Nico Gonzalez signing from Manchester City

Newcastle United have completed the signing of Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City on a long-term contract.

The St James’ Park club will pay an initial £48million ($65.4m) for the Spanish midfielder, with a potential £4m due in add-ons. The Athletic first reported Newcastle’s talks over a deal for Nico on August 18.

“I’ve experienced playing at St. James’ Park twice with Manchester City and it was really tough,” Nico said upon his signing. “The atmosphere was amazing and the fans are so passionate. I can’t wait to experience that as a home player.”

Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle said of the signing: “Nico is a really strong ball carrier, somebody who can drive the team forward while staying composed under pressure. He also brings discipline defensively, he reads the game well and his physicality makes him well suited to the Premier League.”

Newcastle have been looking to strengthen in midfield after selling Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur earlier in the summer and Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal earlier this month, with Nico a priority target in that regard.

The 24-year-old has spent 18 months at City after joining from Porto for €60m (£52m, $68.9m) in February 2025. Nico made 59 appearances for the club, including 41 last term. He started only two Premier League games after January, however, and most recently came on for the final 11 minutes of the Community Shield defeat by Arsenal. He was named on the bench for City’s opening Premier League win over Bournemouth on Sunday but did not feature.

It has been a summer of change at both Newcastle and City.

There have been a number of exits at St James’ Park, including Tonali, Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon from the playing ranks and Eddie Howe in the dugout. The former head coach has been replaced by Jaissle.

For City, Pep Guardiola left the club after a decade of glittering success, while Rodri has joined Barcelona. He followed Bernardo Silva and John Stones as experienced veterans leaving the Etihad Stadium this summer.

Newcastle take on West Bromwich Albion in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday. They return to Premier League action on Saturday with a trip to Tottenham Hotspur.

A significant arrival in more ways than one

Newcastle’s summer has been dominated by departures, yet the signing of Nico marks a significant milestone: The Athletic estimates they have now spent more than £1bn on new players since their takeover by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia in October 2021.

What’s more, more than £500m has come in the past 14 months. Newcastle spent around £265m in summer 2025, and Nico’s arrival takes this year’s tally, once an allowance for agent fees and the Premier League’s transfer levy have been factored in, to near £250m (note: the graphic below works to accounting periods, so this window’s sale of Gordon and purchase of goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen fall into 2025-26).

Of course, the net balance is rather lower. Those departures — Tonali, Guimaraes and Gordon — have contributed to more than £300m in sales proceeds in the past year, even after we deduct for sell-on clauses and solidarity payments due to former clubs.

Those deductions likely mean the Nico signing has tipped Newcastle’s net spend back positive this summer, though they are far below the £141m net outlay of a year ago.
