Jackson Koivun has been handed a Team USA debut for this month’s Presidents Cup, just months after turning professional, as former world No 1 Jason Day missed out on a spot in the International Team.

Koivun enjoyed a glittering amateur career before turning professional after the US Open in June, with the 21-year-old winning the PGA Tour’s 3M Open three starts later and qualifying for the season-ending FedExCup Playoffs.

He will become the youngest American to feature at the Presidents Cup since Jordan Spieth in 2015 after being named among Brandt Snedeker’s six captain’s picks for this year’s edition at Medinah Country Club, where Team USA chase a record-extending 11th consecutive victory in the biennial contest.

Koivun was one of three debutants named among Snedeker’s selections, revealed in a live TV show on Tuesday, with Chris Gotterup – a three-time PGA Tour winner this season – and Genesis Invitational champion Jacob Bridgeman also included.

“It’s rare to see a player this young demonstrate the level of poise and confidence that Jackson has, even before turning professional,” Snedeker said. “His maturity and work ethic have always stood out. He’s already proven he can win on the biggest stage in golf on the PGA Tour, and I’m excited to watch him perform in his first team event.”

Snedeker elected to pick experience to complete the rest of his 12-man line-up, with stalwarts Xander Schauffele, Justin Thomas and Patrick Cantlay all recalled for fourth Presidents Cup appearances.

Ben Griffin and last year’s US Open winner JJ Spaun were among the high-profile players to miss out for Team USA, while Gary Woodland will remain a captain’s assistant despite winning the Texas Children’s Houston Open in March and adding five top-10s since on the PGA Tour.

Day was the highest-ranked player in the International Team qualification rankings not to earn a captain’s spot from Geoff Ogilvy, with the Australian struggling for form and fitness during a season where he failed to qualify for the FedExCup Playoffs for the first time since 2007.

Sungjae Im returns for a fourth appearance for the International Team, while Corey Conners will feature for a third time after narrowly missing out on an automatic pick.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout was handed a third consecutive appearance, with Cognizant Classic winner Nico Echavarria, Canada’s Nick Taylor and Japan’s Ryo Hisatsune confirmed as rookies.

“Christiaan [Bezuidenhout] has experience in this event that would have been difficult to leave on the table,” Ogilvy said. “He’s earned 3.5 points in five matches, including two singles victories. He knows what to expect and he delivers. That’s why I’ve selected him.”

Who had already qualified?

The United States qualification campaign ran from the start of the 2025 PGA Tour season through to the BMW Championship on August 23, with world No 1 Scottie Scheffler headlining the six automatic qualifiers.

Players Championship winner Cameron Young and US Open champion Wyndham Clark were the next two in the automatic standings, as Sam Burns, Russell Henley and Collin Morikawa – all part of last year’s Ryder Cup side – also qualified automatically.

The International Team standings ran from September 8 until the Tour Championship on August 30, with players’ Official World Golf Ranking Points being used to determine their six automatic spots.

Si Woo Kim topped the standings to secure his fourth appearance and Ryan Fox earned a debut by winning The Open at Royal Birkdale, with Hideki Matsuyama, Min Woo Lee, Tom Kim and Adam Scott all returning to the International Team.

Monaco have pulled out of the deal to sell Lamine Camara to Chelsea – who feel the French club have acted in an extraordinary and deeply unprofessional way.

Camara was set to join Chelsea for £47m and was to sign a six-year deal pending a medical.

Just after the 11pm transfer deadline passed, news emerged that Monaco reneged on the agreement they had with Chelsea, and they had informed the Blues of their decision in writing.

The reason for Monaco pulling out was that they had successfully renegotiated the deal to sell Folarin Balogun to Everton, but the striker sensationally backed out of the move at the very last minute.

Monaco only wanted to sell one player, and once they thought they had a deal agreed to sell Balogun to Everton, they pulled out of the Camara-to-Chelsea deal despite a full written club-to-club agreement with the Blues.

Monaco refused to sign a Camara deal sheet before the 11pm deadline, and there is no chance of Chelsea resurrecting a deal for the Senegal international.

The feeling at Chelsea towards Monaco now is likely to be “what goes around comes around”.

Chelsea had been looking for a new midfielder with Enzo Fernandez joining Manchester City in a joint-British-record £125m deal.

Chelsea had the option of pulling the plug on Fernandez’s move to Man City after the Camara deal had collapsed, but they stuck to their word and honoured their commitment to complete the deal.

Roma’s Manu Kone was also shortlisted as a potential option, while Chelsea were also looking at midfield options in the Premier League.

‘Chelsea are really unhappy’

“Enzo Fernandez is going to be a Manchester City player. Lamine Camara to Chelsea collapsing is totally separate.

“Chelsea have not been able to sign a replacement. Chelsea are really unhappy with the way Monaco behaved.

“My information is everything was done – written, agreed, signed. He was flying into London [on Wednesday].

“At the same time, Monaco have been negotiating with Everton to sell Folarin Balogun. Once they have agreed a deal with Everton, they have come back to Chelsea and gone back on their agreement.

“Chelsea don’t believe this is the way clubs should conduct business. I suppose this is one of the risks you take when you leave things so late.”

Who has left Chelsea on Deadline Day?

Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez has completed a season-long loan move to Serie A side Como.

The goalkeeper had been bumped down to Stamford Bridge following the arrival of Emi Martinez from Aston Villa.

Elsewhere, midfielder Dario Essugo has completed a season-long loan move to sister club Strasbourg. Essugo was of interest to Hull in this window.

Striker Deivid Washington has completed a permanent transfer to Strasbourg. He signed from Santos for £17.1m three years ago but made only three appearances.

Forward Dujuan Richards has also joined Wimbledon on a season-long loan.

Meanwhile, Chelsea striker Shim Mheuka has arrived in Glasgow ahead of his loan move to Celtic, who are also working to finalise a deal for Chelsea left-back Landon Emenalo.

Messi, 39, recently announced his retirement from international football, saying he had “nothing left to give” having “given it my all”.

He captained Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar in 2022 but could not repeat the feat against Spain in his final game for his country.

Messi scored 125 goals in 207 appearances for Argentina to become his country’s all-time leading scorer and most-capped player.

“Leo’s legacy will live on forever because of what he achieved, for never giving up and for showing that dreams are hard-won, pursued and, in the end, fulfilled,” Paredes added.

“We’d spoken in the final days of the World Cup about how the final would surely be his last match, but even so, we weren’t prepared for that because of what he means to us.”
