‘Play House’ Sells To Focus Features, Blumhouse Atomic Monster

Published

on

EXCLUSIVE: Focus Features and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster have snapped up Play House, a micro-budget horror film from Nicolas Curcio, in a competitive situation, sources tell Deadline.

We’re told this was a seven-figure deal for worldwide rights, excluding Latin America and India. This is a major coup for Curcio’s debut feature, a film made for just $100,000 — roughly 13% of the reported budget of Curry Barker’s low-budget Focus phenomenon Obsession.

Curcio set the project in motion last September after winning the inaugural Fantastic Pitches contest, a micro-budget genre initiative spearheaded by Alamo Drafthouse’s Fantastic Fest and indie studio Chroma, thereby securing funding and distribution. He returned to Fantastic Fest to premiere the film last month.

Play House will release in theaters in 2027, with Universal Pictures International handling international distribution.

Written by Curcio and wife/creative partner Kirby Gladstein, the film follows Elliott (Will Harrison), who while renovating a dilapidated house to win back his ex, discovers VHS tapes of an unaired children’s TV show which begins to seep into his life, threatening his last chance at reconciliation.

Pic’s cast also includes Jessica Sula, Jordan Gonzalez, and James Urbaniak. Curcio and Gladstein produced for Skinny Ghost, alongside Ben Gojer, Jack Forbes, and Derek Tramont. Exec producers include Ahbra Perry via Chroma, Daniel Levin via Narrative, Adam Hendricks and Greg Gilreath of Divide/Conquer, and Jason Blum of Blumhouse Atomic-Monster. NPerry repped the film for sales via Narrative Distribution.

While Universal art-house label Focus Features has not historically been known as a major horror distributor, outside of recent work with Robert Eggers on titles like Nosferatu and the upcoming Werwulf, they’re now aggressively expanding into the space as supporters of emerging filmmakers, after seeing Obsession break out as their highest-grossing film ever at over $522M worldwide. Divide/Conquer’s Hendricks and Gilreath — EPs on Play House — previously brought that film to Blum, who set it up at Focus, along with his follow-up Anything but Ghosts, dated for May 7, 2027.

You can expect much more to come from the collaboration between Focus Features and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster. Most recently, they announced their partnership on director Josh Giuliano’s Occupant following the buzzy TIFF debut of his first horror film, River.

Curcio is a rising filmmaker who recently set up his high-concept thriller spec Sweet Spot, penned with Gladstein, at Paramount Primal, as we first reported. A writer on Sony Pictures Animation’s hit GOAT, he has developed projects for multiple studios, including a live-action Magic School Bus for Universal and an adaptation of Planet of the Nerds for Paramount. His script Barron made the Black List in 2019.

Curcio is also known for running a popular screenwriting TikTok account with nearly 200K followers and over 10M likes, and has partnered with studios like Neon, A24 and Paramount to promote films. He is repped by 3 Arts, UTA, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.

FCC Chairman Declines To Say If Broadcasters Can Air Live Execution

Published

on

The Pentagon announcement that it plans to livestream the execution of the Fort Hood shooter in December has generated an outcry from public officials and religious figures, including the president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

None of the networks have yet to comment publicly on whether they would air such an event, and there is substantial doubt that they would do so. It undoubtedly would get news coverage surrounding the stream of the execution, which Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has made clear he wants to be public.

On Friday, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr was asked on CNBC if the execution is “something you would allow on broadcast if they wanted to.”

“Ultimately we’re going to defer to Secretary Hegseth and his decisions on how to move forward with this,” Carr said.

A Pentagon spokesperson said that the Dec. 3 execution of Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan would be live streamed and that “details will follow.” Hasan was convicted of killing 13 people and injuring dozens of others in shooting rampage at the Fort Hood military base in 2009.

A livestream falls outside of the FCC’s regulatory power, but the Pentagon feed is something that, absent restrictions, broadcasters could pick up. The FCC’s obscenity, indecency and profanity guidelines do not directly address executions, but under his tenure, Carr has launched investigations of networks on the grounds that they may not be meeting their public interest obligations. FCC guidance earlier this year emphasized, among other things, that stations must air programming that is “responsive to the needs of their local communities.”

“My understanding is it’s not on broadcast TV, so I don’t think there’s a role for the FCC one way or the other there,” Carr said on CNBC. “But I trust Secretary Hegseth. I mean, he’s implementing the laws and regulations that are relevant to the Department of War, and I think he’s doing a great job, and I trust that he’s making the right call on these issues.”

The execution by firing squad is planned for 1 p.m. on that day and will take place at Fort Hood, Hegseth said.

“It hasn’t been since World War II that we have done that, and I kind of like the mentality that we had in World War II,” Hegseth told Real America’s Voice, a pro-Trump network, in an interview this week.

“We will make sure that people are able to watch it, that it is public, because people need to understand there are serious consequences for these types of things,” Hegseth said.

There has been a tradition of state executions allowing a handful of journalists to witness executions, including in Texas, but with a prohibition on photos and video. It’s possible that Hasan’s legal team will try to block those plans as well.

The announcement was condemned by some lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, as well as Archbishop Paul S. Coakley, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, called the plans for a livestream “a barbaric promotion of a culture of death” and said that it “must be reconsidered.”

“The public execution even of one who has done grave harm will only further undermine the moral fabric of our nation and be a blight on the conscience of its people,” Coakley said.

Networks have been cautious about any airing of a public death, issuing viewer advisories or having general policies against airing the moment of death. YouTube also has a policy prohibiting “violent or gory content intended to shock or disgust viewers,” but has exceptions for educational, documentary, scientific or artistic content, “including content that is in the public interest.” A YouTube spokesperson did not immediately return a request for comment.

Another issue will be in how children will be restricted from a livestream. The U.S. Army Corrections System guidelines on military executions does not allow anyone under 18 to be a witness to such an event.

Channing Dungey Re-Ups Contract For New Skydance Role With Title TBD

Published

on

During her decades-long career of top network and studio executive, Channing Dungey has used working titles on numerous shows; now the term applies to her. Three days after she assumed a new position at the new Skydance company when Paramount’s $110B acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery closed on Tuesday, Dungey still does not have an official title; she is temporarily using a version of her old one, Chairman, Warner Bros. Television Group and US Networks.

But her role has been established and, like other top WBD executives invited into the Skydance leadership ranks, Dungey, who had time on her most recent contract, also is believed to have signed a new multi-year deal. Terms have not been revealed but renewals for other WBD execs, including DTC Co-Chairs Casey Bloys and JB Perrette, are said to be for five years.

As Deadline revealed over the weekend, Dungey, formerly Chairman and CEO, Warner Bros. Television Group and US Networks, will now also oversee the Paramount cable networks, including flagships MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and BET, giving her a portfolio of about 30 cable brands in addition of her responsibilities leading the Warner Bros. TV studio. She reports to George Cheeks, Co-Chair and Chief Content Officer, Skydance TV and JB Perrette, Co-Chair and Chief Business Officer, Skydance TV.

Dungey spoke about what is ahead in a memo to staff on Tuesday.

“As we embark on this next chapter in the company’s storied history, my hope is we can work together to make this transition as smooth and positive as possible for all involved, and to build a future for the studios that’s bigger and better than ever,” she wrote.
