Down SFC: Clonduff beat Burren to end 26-year wait for Frank O’Hare Cup

Published

on

Carr’s goal was a real captain’s contribution to settle any early nerves, while his composure was key as Niall Toner’s 41st-minute goal threatened to stir a comeback.

“It’s very hard to put into words, you can see what it means to so many people. It feels like there’s thousands and thousands out on the field here,” Carr told BBC Sport NI.

“Just to finally get over the line, it’s more a sense of relief because I feel we’ve probably left a couple behind in the last few years. I mean, finals are just all about winning and thankfully we did that today.

“You know, it’s ten years since we were in a final and I think there’s seven people playing that are involved today that were involved then. So, caginess was probably to be expected.

“The first week back after the Carryduff game in the semi-final, training was cagey. So, maybe training translated right on to the field. But nerves are normal. No matter how cagey it was, I’m just glad we came out to the right side of it.”

The season doesn’t end here for Clonduff, as they’ll go to represent the county in the Ulster Club Championship starting with a preliminary clash against the Tyrone winners on the weekend ending the 1 November.

Their opponents will be known after next Sunday’s Red Hand decider where Errigal Ciaran take on an Edendork side appearing in their first senior final.

“I was reminded there of an Ulster campaign that never came into anybody’s head. So, it’ll be back down there on Wednesday night. Get back to the tactics board and ready to go,” said Carr.

“It’s a massive honour. A massive honour for me and Stephen (McConville) to be up there on behalf of our players lifting the Cup.

“But to represent the county in Ulster is a massive honour for the whole group. Hopefully, we can give it a bit of a run, we’ll take it one game at a time. The Tyrone Champions come out flying in Ulster, it’s bonus territory for us.”

Matthias Jaissle: Newcastle boss apologises for Coventry loss as Jamie Carragher says they were ‘beaten up’ | Football News

Published

on

Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle has apologised to the travelling fans following their 4-1 loss at Coventry, as Jamie Carragher said they were “beaten up” once again on the road.

The Magpies’ previous away game a month ago also saw them defeated 4-1 on the Monday Night Football at Leeds.

A second loss in three games comes after Jaissle had enjoyed an unbeaten five-game start across all competitions, but recent results have seen his side fall to 11th in the Premier League table.

A wasteful Newcastle lost at Coventry despite having 19 shots, three big chances and more than double the number of touches in the opposition box than the home side.

Jaissle told Sky Sports: “We’re frustrated. It’s a feeling you don’t want to have on a Monday evening after a match where you should win.

“We can only apologise to the fans who came here; they deserve a different result.

“We need to analyse it, clearly. There were bits that were good but, in both boxes, to defend our own goal we need to improve and also score goals.

“The opportunities were there, but the desire and hunger to finish the attacks was missing.”

He added: “We need to improve on the things we can control, and that’s a lot right now.”

Newcastle have now conceded the joint-most goals in the league so far alongside Bournemouth and Chelsea.

The German said at his post-match press conference: “I think it was a tough story throughout the whole match. There were elements in both boxes where we need to step up and improve.

“It’s not something we can compare with the Leeds match today because I think we were at least better.

“The goals we conceded, it was a different story. We were better after the first 10 minutes; we dominated the game but conceded easy goals, which we need to improve.

“If you conceded eight goals in two away matches on Monday evenings, then it’s not good enough for the Premier League.”

Carra: Newcastle ‘beaten up’ again

It is the first time since December 2012 that Newcastle have conceded four or more goals in back-to-back Premier League away games.

For Carragher, the heavy losses at Leeds and Coventry have raised questions over Newcastle’s “lack of physicality”.

Speaking on Monday Night Football, Sky Sports’ Carragher said: “We’ve consistently said this season they’ve had a good start results-wise, but the underlying numbers haven’t been great.

“How many shots they concede, their xG. You look at two away games now where they’ve lost 8-2.

“He’s going with two strikers up there; I know (Yoane) Wissa drops a little bit deeper, but when Eddie Howe was there it was more of a 4-3-3.

“Every manager has their own way, but when you think of the lack of physicality in that team, it might be a case where you leave one of the strikers out and go with an extra body in midfield.

“It’s a young team, and it isn’t as physically powerful as a lot of the teams in the Premier League.

“And in their last two away games, they’ve been beaten up twice – and that’s got to stop very quickly.”

Analysis: Coventry teach Newcastle a lesson in finishing

Bobby Thomas blocks Matias Fernandez-Pardo’s shot to keep Coventry in front against Newcastle

Sky Sports’ Ron Walker:

On a night where they faced the Premier League’s second-highest xG overperformers, it was Coventry who taught Newcastle a lesson in finishing at the CBS Arena.

It was one they had learned the hard way too, with the worst shot conversion of any team in the league coming into Monday’s game and just one of 51 shots finding the back of the net to date.

But football is a funny old game. A 4-1 scoreline suggests Newcastle were outplayed, which could not be further from the truth, though they were certainly outfought.

Where Coventry stood resilient – even clearing off their own line from Matias Fernandez-Pardo once he had rounded Carl Rushworth – Newcastle caused too many of their own problems, and, for once, the Sky Blues took full advantage.

Three superb finishes, and an early penalty, saw them to their first Premier League home win in more than 9,000 days, but their finishing was still not Coventry’s most impressive quality on the night.

Sven Botman scores a screamer to pull one back for Newcastle

That fortitude, digging in after taking an early lead and hanging on after Sven Botman’s wonder strike had given Newcastle a glimmer of hope at 2-1, was what won them the day and, on fight at least, that was enough to crown them worthy winners.

They have already needed that mental strength to bounce back from four goalless and pointless games to start their Premier League return, and, in a league as punishing as this, that could be what decides whether they will stay there come May.
