Coventry 4 – 1 Newcastle

Published

on

Coventry made it back-to-back Premier League wins with a thumping 4-1 home victory over Newcastle to move Frank Lampard’s side out of the relegation zone.

Goals from Jack Rudoni, teenager Sidiki Cherif and substitutes Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni gave the Sky Blues their first home win of the season.

A stunning Sven Botman strike had given Newcastle hope of a comeback in the 70th minute, but Simms restored the hosts’ two-goal lead with his first touch 11 minutes later before Mfuni superbly added a fourth to become Coventry’s youngest-ever Premier League goalscorer.

A night of firsts for Coventry…

  • First home win of the season
  • First PL home win in 25 years
  • First PL home goals of the season
  • First career penalty goal for Jack Rudoni
  • First Coventry goal for Sidiki Cherif
  • Ellis Simms scored with his first touch
  • First senior goal for Stephen Mfuni

The visitors, who suffered a second consecutive 4-1 away defeat, made a nightmare start at the CBS Arena as goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek brought down summer signing Cherif to allow Rudoni to hit a sixth-minute penalty opener.

Newcastle responded well to falling behind but were wasteful as Matias Fernandez-Pardo missed two big chances, with his one-on-one opportunity cleared off the line by Bobby Thomas.

Coventry then punished their profligacy immediately after the restart as Cherif fantastically doubled the lead in the 48th minute with the 19-year-old’s powerful low strike from just outside the box, his first goal for the club.

Botman’s goal, however, was even better as he thundered home from long range, but Coventry hit back through Simm’s deflected strike three minutes and 15 seconds after he came off the bench.

Eighteen-year-old summer signing Mfuni, who joined from Manchester City on loan, then hit his first senior goal in the 86th minute to cap off a fine evening for Lampard’s side.

Coventry can make it three victories in a row when they visit winless Tottenham next Monday, live on Sky Sports, while Newcastle aim to bounce back against Aston Villa at home on Saturday, also live on Sky Sports.

Carra: Newcastle have been ‘beaten up’ in their last two away games

Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher speaking on Monday Night Football:

“Every manager has their own way, but when you think of the lack of physicality in that [Newcastle] team, it might be a case where you leave one of the strikers out and go with an extra body in midfield.

“It’s a young team, and it isn’t as physically powerful as a lot of the teams in the Premier League.

“And in their last two away games, they’ve been beaten up twice – and that’s got to stop very quickly.”

Matthias Jaissle apologises to the travelling Newcastle fans

Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle speaking to Sky Sports:

“We’re frustrated. It’s a feeling you don’t want to have on a Monday evening after a match where you should win.

“We can only apologise to the fans who came here; they deserve a different result.

“We need to analyse it, clearly. There were bits that were good, but in both boxes, to defend our own goal, we need to improve and also score goals. The opportunities were there, but the desire and hunger to finish the attacks was missing.

“We need to improve on the things we can control, and that’s a lot right now.”

Frank Lampard says his Coventry side delivered a ‘complete performance’

Coventry boss Frank Lampard speaking to Sky Sports:

“We played like the team we want to be here. There’s so much spirit and energy. We know we’re going to have to suffer at times in games; we have to understand what the level is.

“But the work ethic from the team, the belief, then you get what you deserve, which is great finishes. We haven’t had that rub of the green, which might have helped us nick a few more points.

“As a complete performance, we’ve got to keep our feet on the ground because it’s only one game and we need 30 more of those. But it’s a great feeling for the players.”

Analysis: Coventry teach Newcastle a lesson in finishing

Sky Sports’ Ron Walker:

On a night where they faced the Premier League’s second-highest xG overperformers, it was Coventry who taught Newcastle a lesson in finishing at the CBS Arena.

It was one they had learned the hard way too, with the worst shot conversion of any team in the league coming into Monday’s game and just one of 51 shots finding the back of the net to date.

But football is a funny old game. A 4-1 scoreline suggests Newcastle were outplayed, which could not be further from the truth, though they were certainly outfought.

Where Coventry stood resilient – even clearing off their own line from Fernandez-Pardo once he had rounded Carl Rushworth – Newcastle caused too many of their own problems, and, for once, the Sky Blues took full advantage.

Three superb finishes, and an early penalty, saw them to their first Premier League home win in more than 9,000 days, but their finishing was still not Coventry’s most impressive quality on the night.

That fortitude, digging in after taking an early lead and hanging on after Botman’s wonder strike had given Newcastle a glimmer of hope at 2-1, was what won them the day and, on fight at least, that was enough to crown them worthy winners.

They have already needed that mental strength to bounce back from four goalless and pointless games to start their Premier League return, and, in a league as punishing as this, that could be what decides whether they will stay there come May.

NBA: London Lions make history against Portland Trail Blazers but get a lesson in Oregon | NBA News

Published

on

The London Lions became the first British club to face an NBA team but suffered a heavy 119-66 defeat to the Portland Trail Blazers in Oregon on Monday.

London never led as Portland dominated throughout, leading for 99 per cent of the contest and stretching their advantage to as many as 57 points at one stage.

The Trail Blazers extended their lead in every quarter, going into the breaks 34-21, 72-33 and 100-49 ahead, having entered the game as 36.5-point favourites.

Portland shot 56 per cent from the field and made 16 of their 34 three-point attempts, while London managed just 30 per cent overall and went 7 of 33 from beyond the arc.

The hosts dominated inside, outscoring the Lions 54-24 in the paint and winning the rebounding battle 51-32.

Overall, Portland registered 32 assists on 45 made field goals and showcased some nice ball movement at the Moda Center as they moved to 2-0 in preseason action.

London also committed 24 turnovers, from which Portland scored 39 points, compared with just 14 points the Lions generated from their opponents’ mistakes.

The game was played under NBA rules rather than European regulations, with 12-minute quarters instead of 10, a larger court and a three-point line further from the basket.

London briefly threatened to make a contest of it towards the end of the first quarter.

Ethan Price hit two three-pointers from 26 feet in the space of 40 seconds, both assisted by Devante Adams either side of a Deni Avdija layup, to bring the Lions within four points at 23-19 with three minutes remaining in the period.

But Portland took control with a 38-12 second quarter, including a 15-0 run over the final four minutes of the half.

Maxwell Lewis, the only London player with previous NBA experience, led the Lions with 13 points, five rebounds and a game-high four steals.

Adams added 12 points off the bench, while Price and Joel Scott contributed eight apiece. Six of Scott’s points came in the fourth quarter, while Thomas Kennedy collected six rebounds, including three offensive boards.

Great Britain international Tarik Phillip endured a difficult night, missing all eight of his field-goal attempts, including five from three-point range. His three points came entirely from the free-throw line.

Portland’s five starters played a combined 76 minutes for 45 points. None of them appeared after half-time.

Toumani Camara and Scoot Henderson led the Trail Blazers with 14 points each. Henderson made four of his five three-point attempts in just 16 minutes off the bench.

Yang Hansen added 13 points and four assists, including a three-pointer from 25 feet, while Sidy Cissoko also scored 13, shooting a perfect 5 of 5 from the field and making all three of his attempts from beyond the arc.

Jeremy Sochan, who grew up in England, finished with eight points and a game-high eight rebounds, while marquee name Ja Morant scored five points and dished five dimes.

Deni Avdija recorded a game-best plus-minus of +44 in 17 minutes, while London’s Keenan Evans finished at -45 in 20 minutes.

Damian Lillard, Robert Williams III, Shaedon Sharpe and Chris Youngblood did not feature for the Trail Blazers.

Coach Sabonis returns to where his father made his name

London are coached by Tautvydas Sabonis, whose father Arvydas spent seven seasons with Portland across the 1990s and early 2000s. Tautvydas had not visited the city for more than a decade.

Sabonis admitted the timing of the trip was far from ideal.

“If I had to choose a different timing, I would definitely choose it in the preseason, not now,” he said.

Last season was his first in charge of the Lions, who won all four domestic competitions.

London are the reigning Super League Basketball champions, have started this season 5-0 in the SLB and have won one of their opening two EuroCup group games. In 2024, they became the first British men’s club to reach the EuroCup semi-finals.

The Lions made a round trip of almost 10,000 miles in the middle of their domestic and European campaigns, arriving in Portland on Saturday afternoon before departing immediately after the game. They host Skyliners Frankfurt in the EuroCup on Thursday.

To minimise jet lag, the squad remained on British time throughout their stay in Oregon, waking at around 4am for breakfast.

A historic meeting with implications beyond Portland

The closest British and NBA club basketball had previously come to such a meeting was the 1995 McDonald’s Championship, when Sheffield Sharks and Houston Rockets participated in the same tournament but did not face each other.

The Lions have submitted a bid to join the EuroLeague, which has ambitions to expand from 20 to 24 clubs by the 2027-28 season.

Owned by Lithuanian technology company Tesonet, London also became the first British basketball club to wear Jordan Brand kit this season.

Meanwhile, the proposed NBA Europe competition has placed renewed attention on the British market, with London and Manchester both discussed as potential franchise cities.

Monday’s exhibition was not connected to that project, but it offered the Lions an opportunity to test themselves against NBA opposition and put British club basketball on an international stage.

The result demonstrated the gulf between the teams. The occasion, however, was about more than the scoreline.
