One week before Opening Night, the 2026-27 NBA season is shaping up as a battle between teams that must win now and teams that can afford to wait. With the league having crowned eight different champions in eight seasons, the pressure on the all-in contenders has never been higher.

At the top of the desperation rankings sit the Phoenix Suns. After a first-round exit last season, Phoenix pushed its chips in again, acquiring Miles Bridges at the cost of another unprotected first-round pick. The result: an all-in roster with the least flexibility in the league and no margin for error.
Cleveland and Minnesota go all-in
Right behind Phoenix are the Cleveland Cavaliers, who have doubled down on a veteran core of Donovan Mitchell, James Harden and Peyton Watson. Cleveland does not control its own first-round picks through 2031, so anything short of a deep run makes the long-term math look ugly.
The Minnesota Timberwolves are in a similar bind after acquiring LaMelo Ball to pair with Anthony Edwards and Rudy Gobert. The move solidified the core but left the franchise with minimal resources to build out the supporting cast around its stars.
The Lakers lock in; the champs reload
The Los Angeles Lakers surged up the urgency list after committing serious money to retain Austin Reaves and secure Walker Kessler, effectively locking their roster into its current shape for the foreseeable future. Luka Doncic’s brilliance keeps them dangerous, but the supporting pieces are set in stone.
Meanwhile the defending champion New York Knicks — who ended a 53-year drought by beating the Spurs 4-1 behind Finals MVP Jalen Brunson — face a different kind of pressure: no team has repeated since the 2018 Warriors. A summer that sent Giannis Antetokounmpo to Miami and LeBron James and Jaylen Brown to Philadelphia has only raised the bar. Opening Night tips off October 20, with Sixers at Knicks and Thunder at Spurs headlining the triple-header.
