Caleb Williams Unsure About Sunday Return After ‘Serious’ Hamstring Tear

Caleb Williams is not making any promises about Sunday. The Chicago Bears quarterback told reporters he still does not know whether he will play against the Atlanta Falcons, revealing he must first undergo stress testing and clear medical protocols before returning from a hamstring tear he described as “pretty serious.”

The Fiery Press Conference

Speaking at Halas Hall on Thursday, Williams opened his first press conference since the injury with a preemptive statement: “Before you start asking, I do not know if I’m playing yet.”

The second-year star confirmed he suffered a torn hamstring in the fourth quarter of the Week 2 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on September 20 — an injury that sent him off the field on a cart and sidelined him for the first three games of his NFL career. The Bears went 2-1 in his absence behind Case Keenum and Tyson Bagent.

Frustration With The Coverage

Williams was visibly annoyed with how the injury was covered. When pressed on the grade of the tear, he shut the question down cold: “It’s not deserved. Next question.” He said anything not heard directly from him or head coach Ben Johnson had “probably been wrong,” and dismissed the mockery he received for his emotional reaction on the cart.

“I’m always going to show emotion. I care,” he said. Williams admitted he felt a “pop” when the injury happened and feared it might end his season: “I did not know if it would be season ending.”

A Return Getting Closer

The signs are encouraging. Williams practiced in full on Thursday for the second straight day and said he hit “one of the highest speeds” he has reached during rehab. But the Bears will wait for Friday’s final injury report — and the results of his stress tests — before deciding whether their franchise quarterback takes the field in Week 6.
