Street Fighter punched its way to the top of the box office this weekend. The Paramount Pictures action film generated $13 million from 3,575 North American theaters on Friday, and it is projected to pull in around $31 million by the end of Sunday.

A Crowded Weekend, One Clear Winner

This was a packed release weekend, with Street Fighter battling fellow newcomers Sense and Sensibility, Whalefall and You Can See Everything. The closest challenger, You Can See Everything, opened at No. 2 with $5.5 million on Friday, less than half of Street Fighter’s haul. The video game adaptation’s strong start signals that the arcade legend’s box office power is still very much alive.

Video Game Movies Keep Winning

The $13 million Friday marks an encouraging debut for the latest attempt to bring the beloved fighting game franchise to the big screen. With a wide release across more than 3,500 theaters and strong audience demand, Street Fighter looks well positioned to dominate the weekend chart and set the stage for a healthy theatrical run.

If the $31 million weekend projection holds, it will be one of the stronger October openings for a video game adaptation, and it could cement the film as a franchise launcher for Paramount.
