Billy Gunn Calls Triple H’s 2019 Hall of Fame Shot at AEW ‘a Dick Move’ That Only Hurt Him

Billy Gunn isn’t sugarcoating it anymore. Seven years after Triple H fired off a shot at AEW during the 2019 WWE Hall of Fame ceremony, Gunn has called the moment “a dick move” — and says it only made one person look bad.

D-Generation X was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2019, with Triple H, Road Dogg, Sean Waltman, Billy Gunn, Shawn Michaels, and the late Chyna all going in. Gunn was already working for AEW at the time, though the company hadn’t run a single show yet. When the crowd started chanting “AEW” during the ceremony, Triple H responded that Vince McMahon would buy that “pissant company” just to fire Gunn again.

Gunn Saw It Coming

Speaking to Kenny McIntosh on Inside The Ropes, Gunn said he wasn’t blindsided. He knew AEW was the hot topic and that, as the one guy in another company, he’d be the target — Tony Khan, he noted, had been “super cool” about letting him attend the ceremony at all. But in hindsight, he doesn’t think the shot was necessary: it was an attempt to “save face” when the reality was simple — competition was coming, and that’s just the wrestling business.

“The Only One That Got Hurt Was Him”

Gunn’s verdict is blunt: the only person hurt by the exchange was Triple H himself. The line about McMahon buying AEW aged particularly badly — McMahon never purchased the company and is no longer involved with WWE following the lawsuit filed by former employee Janel Grant. Seven years later, AEW is still running, and Gunn is still telling the story on his terms.
