De Zerbi Admits Spurs “Lack Confidence” But Backs Team After First League Win

Roberto De Zerbi admitted his Tottenham players are still short on confidence after finally securing their first Premier League win of the season — but the head coach insisted the spirit and attitude are there. Spurs beat Coventry City 3-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, lifting the club off the bottom of the table.

“We Lack Confidence, But We Are a Good Team”

Speaking after the match, De Zerbi was honest about the state of his squad. While praising the character shown in the win, he acknowledged that belief is still fragile after such a miserable run of results. His message was clear: the quality exists in this group, even if the confidence is still catching up.

It is a fair assessment. Tottenham had won just 11 of 49 league games since James Maddison’s last start, and this was only their sixth win in their last 37 home league matches. Confidence doesn’t rebuild overnight — but three points is the fastest way to start.

Maddison’s Magic Sparked It

The win was built on the long-awaited return of James Maddison, who marked his first start in 18 months with a brilliant 20-yard strike in the 14th minute. After an ACL injury wiped out most of last season and a fractured shoulder hit him on opening weekend, the 29-year-old’s comeback goal drew gasps around the stadium.

Jack Rudoni briefly equalised for Coventry, but Omar Marmoush’s first goal for the club and a stoppage-time strike from Ben Davies — gifted by a dreadful Carl Rushworth error — sealed a victory De Zerbi hopes will finally give his side lift-off.
