Kari Skogland to Direct ‘Vigilant’, Vigilante Crime Thriller From ‘Severance’ Star Ólafur Darri Ólafsson

Kari Skogland — the director behind The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and The Walking Dead — is set to direct Vigilant, a vigilante crime thriller adapted for television by Severance star Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Deadline reports.

A Big-Ticket European Co-Production

Based on a novel by Skúli Sigurðsson, Vigilant is shaping up as a major European co-production. The project has been greenlit by Icelandic production company ACT4 alongside German broadcaster ZDF and its distribution division ZDF Studios, with Iceland’s Siminn also on board. ZDF Studios will sell the English-language series internationally, while Zero Gravity handles U.S. sales — a deal structure that signals serious global ambitions.

A Moral Minefield

The series follows a female journalist who is approached by a self-styled vigilante waging a violent campaign against sexual predators. At first she sees him as a voice for the voiceless — but soon begins to suspect a darker truth beneath his crusade.

As her reporting ignites a nationwide debate, Vigilant digs into an uncomfortable question: can violence ever be justified when the justice system fails? It’s exactly the kind of morally thorny, character-driven material Skogland has thrived on, and with Ólafsson’s own turn in Severance’s unsettling world fresh in viewers’ minds, the pairing feels like a natural fit for a show built on dread and ambiguity.

No cast or release date has been announced yet, but with production partners locked in and international sales underway, Vigilant is clearly being positioned as one of Europe’s prestige plays for the coming seasons.
