Days after EA cancelled Mass Effect 5 and shut down the entire BioWare studio, new details have emerged about the game we will never play — and they make the cancellation hurt even more. YouTube creator Dantics revealed the gameplay specifics in a new video, painting a picture of an ambitious revival that never got its chance.
The project, reportedly titled Mass Effect Universe, was cancelled last week in the same move that closed BioWare’s doors — a decision that has already sparked a fan petition with over 50,000 signatures.

Mass Effect 5 Details: Hitman-Style Freedom, Environmental Hacking, and Liara’s Return
According to the reveal, the game featured handcrafted missions built around Hitman-style freedom, letting players tackle objectives through multiple approaches rather than funneling them down scripted corridors. Players could hack the environment itself to turn the world into a weapon, and combat included brutal close-range executions — a darker, more physical edge for the series.
One of the most exciting details for longtime fans: Liara T’Soni was returning. The asari scientist turned Shadow Broker, one of the most beloved characters in the original trilogy, was set to play a role in the new chapter — a clear signal the game was leaning back into the trilogy’s legacy rather than repeating Andromeda’s soft-reboot approach.
What Could Have Been for Mass Effect
These details land like salt in a wound. After Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s troubled reception and years of BioWare being whittled down, Mass Effect Universe was widely seen as the studio’s last shot at redemption — a return to the universe that defined a generation of RPGs. Former BioWare voices, including Mark Darrah, have since spoken about the closure, with Darrah even suggesting EA might sell Mass Effect and Dragon Age outright.
For now, the franchise’s future is a blank. But the Dantics reveal gives fans something they rarely get: a real look at the ambition behind the cancellation notice. Hitman-style mission design, environmental hacking, brutal executions, and Liara’s return — it sounds like the sequel a generation of players had been waiting for. It just will never ship.
