Karoline Leavitt Compares Katie Zacharia’s Abrupt Press Secretary Exit to ‘The Apprentice’ on Bill Maher

Karoline Leavitt had a ready-made pop-culture comparison when Bill Maher pressed her on Katie Zacharia’s blink-and-you-missed-it tenure as Donald Trump’s White House press secretary. Appearing on HBO’s Real Time on Friday, Leavitt framed Zacharia’s exit with an unmistakable “The Apprentice” nod: the president is known for “moving on from people.”

Zacharia’s stint barely registered: after one briefing that lasted just 14 minutes, she was ousted last Friday — less than a week in the job. Leavitt, her predecessor in the role, described the position as “a tough job” and one of the “hardest” in Washington, telling Maher: “That pressure in that room is enormous. The press are vicious.”

Despite the jokes, Leavitt gave Zacharia credit for stepping up to the podium at all. “As the president said, it wasn’t a good fit, and that’s okay,” she said. “I wish her well, and we’re on to the next. And he has a lot of options.”

The segment underscored how quickly the White House briefing room can chew through a press secretary — Leavitt herself left the job earlier and knows the glare firsthand.

What Leavitt’s “Apprentice” Comment Really Means

Invoking Trump’s most famous catchphrase-era TV persona was no accident. “He’s known for moving on from people” lands as both defense and warning: in this White House, fit is everything, and the revolving door at the podium keeps spinning.
