Kartik Aaryan’s upcoming action drama “Captain India” is set amid the Houthi conflict in Yemen, Variety has exclusively learned — giving the film a ripped-from-the-headlines geopolitical edge. The project marks Aaryan’s first-ever turn as a pilot, with Shimit Amin directing.

The film is based on a real humanitarian evacuation, with Aaryan’s character leading the rescue effort. According to Variety, the Yemen conflict is central to the story and adds a geopolitical dimension to the drama — though exactly how the fighting figures into the plot has not been disclosed. The film is expected to follow the obstacles of carrying out a humanitarian mission as tensions rise.
Captain India: What We Know About the Kartik Aaryan Starrer
“Captain India” has had a long road to the runway. First announced in July 2021 with Hansal Mehta initially attached to direct, the project was retooled after years in development, with Shimit Amin — the filmmaker behind Chak De! India and Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year — taking the helm. It marks Amin’s return to feature-film direction after a gap of roughly 17 years, making it one of Bollywood’s most anticipated directorial comebacks.
The film is produced by T-Series (Bhushan Kumar) and Baweja Studios (Harman Baweja) alongside Dopamine Studios, with a screenplay credited to Nash Vazifdar, Sanchit Gupta and Priyadarshee Shrivastava. Parvathy Thiruvothu and Manish Chaudhari are reported to be part of the cast, and the film has reportedly locked an August 13, 2027 theatrical release — timed for the Independence Day weekend.
Is Captain India Based on Operation Raahat?
The premise has drawn inevitable comparisons to Operation Raahat, India’s dramatic 2015 evacuation of Indian citizens and foreign nationals from war-torn Yemen. That connection remains widely discussed in fan and trade circles — but the makers have not officially named the real-life mission that inspired the film, so it is safest to treat the Raahat link as informed speculation rather than confirmed fact for now.
What is confirmed is the scale of ambition: a London schedule is underway, Morocco has been scouted for the international rescue sequences, and the whole production is being positioned as a major aerial rescue thriller. For Aaryan — fresh off a National Film Award for Chandu Champion — the role continues his deliberate shift toward serious dramatic territory after years of romantic comedies and horror-comedies.
With a real humanitarian crisis as its backdrop and one of Hindi cinema’s most respected directors returning to the chair, “Captain India” is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing Indian films on the 2027 calendar.
