Liverpool 2-2 London City Lionesses: twice from behind

Liverpool opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Jenna Clark was brought down inside the area by Mapi Leon, and Beata Olsson ruthlessly dispatched the penalty from 12 yards. The lead lasted just three minutes: Freya Godfrey caught Khiara Keating dawdling on the ball, pinched possession and rolled into the empty net.

London City completed the turnaround just before half-time, with Kadidiatou Diani converting from Daniëlle van de Donk’s assist in the 44th minute after Alejandra Bernabe’s attempted header back to Keating fell short. The visitors went into the break 2-1 up.

Jana Fernandez own goal rescues Liverpool point

Liverpool pushed hard for an equaliser throughout the second half, dominating possession with just over 60 percent of the ball and firing in 15 shots to London City’s 12. Elene Lete denied Natalia Ramos’ curling attempt, and Cornelia Kapocs clipped the crossbar with a deep delivery into the box.

The reward finally came deep into added time. Kapocs’ delivery from right to left reached the back stick, and Fernandez turned the ball into her own net in the 92nd minute as Olsson tried to pounce, sealing a deserved 2-2 draw for Gareth Taylor’s side. The point still leaves Liverpool’s winless run in the WSL at three matches, while London City remain firmly in the title mix near the top of the division.
