The digital launch gives North American viewers their first widely available chance to watch the film at home, following its North American premiere at this year’s JAPAN CUTS event on July 10. The Canadian premiere is screening at the 30th annual Fantasia International Film Festival.
What Is cocoon About?
cocoon is set on a tropical southern island, where San and her best friend Mayu attend the island’s top all-girls school. Their ordinary school days are shattered when war reaches their country, and the students are soon drawn into the war effort, including the rear-line care of the wounded.
One by one, San and Mayu lose their friends as the war worsens, turning a story about girlhood into a devastating portrait of what conflict takes from the young. It is a premise that has earned the source manga lasting respect since Kyo first released it in 2010, 65 years after the end of World War II, with the anime arriving in 2025, 80 years after the war’s end.

Why cocoon Is Worth Watching
War stories told through the eyes of schoolgirls carry a particular emotional weight, and cocoon leans into that perspective rather than battlefield spectacle. For viewers who value anime that treats young characters seriously and refuses easy answers, this is one of the most important releases of the year.
With the digital release now live and the Blu-ray edition arriving January 19, there is no reason to wait. cocoon is a film that stays with you long after the credits roll.
