Kay Cannon has found her next studio directing vehicle: Single at the Wedding, a romantic comedy that she will rewrite and direct for New Line Cinema. The project was revealed exclusively, and its title tells you exactly what to expect.

The film follows Allie, who, as the last single one of her friends, is determined to find love at her best friend’s wedding. It is a classic rom-com set-up, built for awkward encounters, wedding-weekend chaos and a heroine who refuses to sit on the sidelines of her own love life.
Kay Cannon Teams With Eben Russell on Single at the Wedding
Cannon will team with Eben Russell, creator of the Freeform comedy series Alone Together, for a new pass on the original screenplay by Anne Sundell. That script was originally developed by Sundell and Alex Richanbach, and the new version will shape it into Cannon’s directing vehicle.
The pairing makes sense for the material. Cannon has a long track record in screen comedy, and Russell’s work on Alone Together shows a feel for friendship-driven humour, which should suit a story built around a close friend group and one very high-stakes wedding.
Why Single at the Wedding Fits Kay Cannon’s Comedy Style
Rom-coms live or die on their lead, and Allie sounds like a strong centre for one: the last single friend in a group where everyone else has paired off, heading into a wedding determined to change that. The premise leaves plenty of room for both laughs and heart, especially if the film leans into the friendship at its core as much as the romance.
No casting or release date has been announced yet, but with Cannon attached to both rewrite and direct, Single at the Wedding is now one to watch for rom-com fans. More details should follow as New Line moves the project forward.
