Chelsea 2-0 Man Utd: Martinez Red Card and Rogers-Palmer Goals Leave Carrick on the Brink

Chelsea beat 10-man Manchester United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, with second-half goals from Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer and a red card for Lisandro Martinez heaping fresh pressure on under-fire boss Michael Carrick.

United were arguably the better side before the break, but the game turned sharply after half-time as Chelsea took control and Martinez lost his head.

Chelsea 2-0 Man Utd: Rogers Breaks the Deadlock at Stamford Bridge

United had the better of the first half, generating 1.09 expected goals to Chelsea’s 0.28, and both sides had goals ruled out for offside — Estevao Willian for the hosts and Matheus Cunha for the visitors after a Harry Maguire knockdown. Bruno Fernandes, back in the starting XI, blazed the best chance over from Bryan Mbeumo’s cross.

Five minutes after the restart, Rogers — who credits Carrick for reviving his career during their time together at Middlesbrough — surged unchallenged through midfield and dinked a deft finish over Senne Lammens for his fifth league goal of the season.

Martinez Red Card Seals Carrick’s Fate

Martinez was first booked for hauling back Rogers, then needlessly crashed forearm-first into Wesley Fofana moments later. After a VAR review, referee Peter Bankes awarded a penalty and showed a second yellow, sending the Argentine off. Palmer converted — his 50th Premier League goal in 105 Chelsea appearances — and Lammens could only get a hand to the spot-kick.

As Martinez walked off, he appeared to ignore Carrick entirely, walking past the United bench without a glance. United’s winless run stretched to nine games, and with Chelsea fourth on 16 points, Carrick’s tenure looks increasingly untenable.
