When Grayson Waller made his shocking return to NXT at the end of July, he cut a blistering pipebomb promo that ended with the line “consider your cages rattled.” Now the NXT Champion has revealed exactly where that now-famous catchphrase came from — and it traces back to Triple H.

Appearing on “What’s Your Story” with Stephanie McMahon, Waller rewatched the promo and explained the origin of the “cages rattled” line. It came from an old interview Triple H did with Cody Rhodes, where they discussed Cody’s departure from WWE and how sometimes you have to go out and rattle the cages.

Waller said he had watched the interview close to when he cut his own promo, and Triple H’s advice hit home. At the time, the Australian star admitted he was sitting backstage “saying please and thank you,” being quiet, doing his job, and not making any noise — and nobody was listening to him.
“I took Hunter’s advice,” Waller explained. “That was my version of doing that and getting people to pay attention. It set me off because he was right; I wasn’t doing the right thing. I wasn’t rattling any cages. Why would you pay attention to someone sitting quietly in the corner?”
Rhodes himself previously revealed that Triple H told him to “rattle some cages” after he left WWE, and clearly the message stuck with Waller too. The promo became a mission statement: Waller tore into Austin Theory, The New Day, the entire NXT men’s roster — and even himself — before declaring he was back to win the NXT Championship he never captured in his first run.
What next for Grayson Waller after the “cages rattled” promo?
The attitude clearly worked. Waller has since become the face of NXT and the reigning NXT Champion. He is set to defend the title against Tony D’Angelo at NXT Halloween Havoc tonight, headlining the show in a massive grudge match.
