Drew Spence ‘Very Proud’ to Break WSL Appearance Record With 217th Game for Tottenham

Tottenham midfielder Drew Spence says it is a “very proud moment” to become the Women’s Super League’s all-time appearance record holder, after starting against Birmingham City on Sunday for her 217th appearance in the competition.

The 34-year-old overtook ex-Chelsea captain Millie Bright to set the new benchmark. Spence was named Tottenham captain in the summer and could become the only outfield player at the club to play 90 minutes in all of their WSL games this season.

Drew Spence Reflects on WSL Record and Career Sacrifices

“I’ve been around for a while! I’m incredibly proud to be able to do that and it’s not just a proud moment for me, but also for my family,” Spence told BBC Sport. “It’s [about] all the hard work that I put in throughout the years. When you’re younger, you don’t really think about these types of accolades.” She added that the record reflects years of sacrifice: “I know the sacrifices — looking after yourself and making sure that you’re available all the time. I know how hard it is to keep that motivation for so many seasons.”

From 14 Years at Chelsea to Spurs Captain

Spence has played her entire career in London, spending 14 years at Chelsea — winning five league titles and four FA Cups — before moving to Tottenham in 2022. Chelsea midfielder Erin Cuthbert praised her former teammate as “a great team-mate, such a sweet soul off the pitch, but when she got on it, she was an absolute warrior.” Spence, who switched international allegiance from England to Jamaica in 2021, says she is in the best shape of her life under Spurs manager Martin Ho, having played every minute of the 2026-27 season so far.
