Kai Havertz scored the only goal of the game as Arsenal beat Liverpool at Anfield for the first time since 2012, in a Premier League clash between the champions of the past two seasons. The German’s first-half strike punished a costly error from Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson, who gifted possession away with a poor pass out from the back.
Alisson did partially atone with a superb save to deny Christos Tzolis later in the match, but the damage was already done. It was a rare off day for the Brazilian, whose mistake ultimately decided a tight contest.
Liverpool player ratings vs Arsenal
The hosts toiled against a disciplined Arsenal side. Alexander Isak got into good positions but could not find the net and was unlucky not to win a penalty, while Florian Wirtz struck the bar with a fine free-kick — though for his price tag, the expectation is that he delivers in big games. Alexis Mac Allister was heavily involved in the first half but will rue a missed header from Milos Kerkez’s cross. Bradley Barcola impressed down the left flank, yet is still waiting for his first Premier League goal.
Arsenal’s disciplined defensive display
Declan Rice brought real energy to the Arsenal midfield, setting the tone for a performance built on structure and counter-attacking threat. Riccardo Calafiori handled Cody Gakpo superbly, and Christos Tzolis caused constant problems down the left — Ronald Araujo, on his 12th consecutive start, was given a real test by the winger. Arsenal’s game management saw the match out comfortably after Havertz’s opener.
The result is a statement win for the Gunners in the title race, while Liverpool’s home defeat hands their rivals a significant early-season edge at Anfield.
